My own two cents: these first few issues were great. Staples is lucky she got to draw the objectively-decent first issue and then two more fairly strong ones after. But Waid went back to being mediocre as hell like 2-3 issues right after.

I went in with pretty much no expectations for the reboot considering I didn't know anything about OG Archie other than that it was a constant love triangle.
I was very pleasantly surprised. I really liked it. I've even tried recommending it to some friends.

A shitty "modernized" ghost of what made Archie endearing for so many decades. The new series is a complete reboot that resembles the classic characters in name and appearance only. After reading a few issues of the new series, I suggest picking up a couple of the "digest" titles to do a comparison for yourself.

I've read some of the older Archie's and they're fun, but it's such a massive body of work that it's hard to know where to begin.

The new stuff places the "innocent fun and shenanigans" feel in the backseat and pushes a "modern teenager perspective of Riverdale" experience instead. It feels like all the characters were swapped out for a bunch of modern teenagers from the real world who're now stuck in the Archieverse and have no choice but to try and live their new lives without raising suspicion.

Not really. Reggie, Veronica and her dad is still the same. Betty's been buffed and Jughead's still a bro, but with each of them having backstories.
Moose and the others, I can't comment. Archie recognizable with Jughead but alone, they're using him with a new take. They're different by a bit but not too huge a difference.

I just couldn't get behind Waid's writing, just like his Avengers, it feels like nothing is happening despite things happening.
I'm actually really digging Zdarsky's Jughead, don't let Erica Henderson's art scare you off: I don't know if it's Archie's editorial or Zdarsky or what, but her art isn't quite as bad as it is over at Marvel.
