I don't feel the movie up to this point earned the right to have a twist this dark. Unlike Coraline, and even then the ghost children scene isn't half as disturbing as this.
>>
How exactly in your opinion does a movie "earn the right" to put in a dark twist?

Are you saying its something the audience should be prepared for by easing them into a dark atmosphere? It packs less of a punch that way.
>>
The twist wasn't that dark. Besides, the ending is the only reason the movie is so well-liked. If they had altered the twist or the earlier tone, the ending wouldn't have as much impact, and the movie wouldn't be very good.
>>
>>83812042
Fuck you, Anon, I like the entire movie.
>>
What movie?
>>
>>83811719
Not necessarily dark, but I found the first half of the movie really silly.
The zombies being played for laughs, for example, and things only got cheesier from there with the angry mob bit. I just don't think the tone was balanced as nicely as Coraline

It's been a while since I saw the movie, so maybe I'm not remembering so well, but I think there was a bit of a buildup to a "darker" tone as it neared the end. Like when they were all trapped in that building, things got much more tense. It became less and less like "haha! silly monsters" and more "oh shit, lives are actually in danger here".

See that twist, and Aggie's character, are what made the movie amazing to me.

It took the earlier themes of bullying and showed what deadly serious consequences that mindset can lead to.

Without it, it wouldn't have been nearly as memorable to me.

There was a clear connection. Aggie and Norman had the same power, and that's why people thought they were weird.

I've only read the screenplay for this, but I really enjoyed it.

Not sure if I would enjoy it on the screen however. Maybe I'll give it a chance eventually.

>>83814523
I think the parallel was pretty clear, and she wasn't a witch, she (and he) could just see things others didn't, actually see more of the world and the truth of things. This ability allowed for great empathy. Because they couldn't understand it themselves though, others attacked them, eventually leading to what happened.

Because someone is different even if it is in a way that may offer great benefits, they are often treated terribly, at humanity's ugliest, resulting in what happened then, and still happens today.

And yes, children are still murdered for being witches today.
>>
>>83814523
she wasn't a witch, she could see ghosts like norman
>>
>>83814683
>>83814692

Of course, because normal people curse entire towns every day, right?
>>
>>83814600

Unfortunately, it's in a lot of countries. Toddlers or younger sometimes.

Sometimes witchcraft is the reason, sometimes not sharing the murderers' religion, often ethnic cleansing.

I remember reading about how in Europe in the past, especially for really little children, sometimes rocks or other weights had to be attached for the hanging to take.
>>
>>83814791
she did that as a ghost
>>
>>83814911
No, she didn't. Rewatch the movie.
>>
>>83814791
She probably cursed them because she was a frightened little kid and they murdered her publicly as a group/town in cols blood?

Did you actually watch the movie?
>>
>>83814924
You're misinterpreting what I'm saying.
Again.
>>
>>83814918
They were about to kill her (and did murder her) and she was a terrified, innocent little girl. I think you missed the point.

Even then, she does learn to let go because retribution makes you ugly, but I don't think you were supposed to judge her in that moment.
>>
>>83814970
Whatbare you saying? They decided to kill her before she did anything. Like Norman, all she did,was have friendly chats with the people she could see. Most kids if they were about to be murdered by their entire town, and they'd done nothing wrong, would be upset.
>>
>>83814625

If you don't want to sleep tonight search child hanged or children hanged or those with public execution, poke around. I wouldn't do it, then again, it's important people are aware atrocities are happening since it can help head them off from happening here.

Babies are hanged sometimes, too.

I really wish I hadn't seen those pictures though so maybe don't.
>>
>>83814918
You're taking that scene too literally, if she had attacked them she wouldn't have been hanged. She was "speaking with the dead"
>>
Well this is a fun and cheerful thread right before bed.

Cartoons.
>>
>>83815017
>>83815117
I assumed she was hung by the rest of the townspeople. If they saw what she did to the judges, that would only convince them furthur that she was a witch and needed to die

I'm so filled with disgust and hate I don't think I should search these things. as I say that though, I feel like a coward. I feel like sitting in my nice home across the world and lying to myself. No, watch that scene again.

She had already been sentenced and at the end she only announced intentions that she only carried out long after she, and they, were already dead. Nothing happened in that scene to them, she said she planned on revenge for exposition. And again she was already sentenced and condemned to be hanged at that point, that happened first.

"Incest" is generally regarded as a sexual relationship between immediate family members (parents, siblings, children, and to a lesser extent first cousins).

If you're at least two degrees of separation apart it's kosher. A great great great great great great aunt would surely qualify.

Her hands were shaking.

The violent trembles made the metal fastened around her wrists clang together as they dug into her delicate skin. Bruises already darkened the area from when they grabbed her. Please, please no. Don't do this.

Words, such meaningless words were so cold in the large room. They seemed to echo, reaching from one dark corner to another until they cut through her. She should be listening, her mommy taught her to listen when adults spoke. But she couldn't, couldn't listen or she might start screaming. God! Please no!

Her little chest was heaving, aching as the air came in short pants. Her heart, her poor heart, fluttered against her ribs so fast she worried it might jump out. The rest of her body was numb. Let this be a dream, just a dream.

She was crying. Tears slid down her ashen face into the scratches on her cheek making them burn. Eyes stared down at her, judging her very soul. She curled into herself under their weight.
>>
"I didn't do anything wrong!" she cried harder, shrinking toward the door desperate to escape the monsters. She wanted her mommy. That's all she ever wanted. She didn't hurt anybody.

"You spoke to the dead. You dare bring damnation on us all," there was no pity in his voice, no remorse for what he was about to do, "You will be hanged for witchcraft." No, no, no! God No! Please SOMEBODY STOP THIS!

No one helped her.

Hands hard and calloused grasped her arms and dragged her from the room. She jerked back, pleading openly now. She twisted back to stare at the judge, crying, begging for somebody to stop! Somebody listen!

"I was playing! I didn't do anything!" she sobbed, "Don't, please don't!" They dragged her past the edge of the village toward the woods without care for the thrashing child in their arms.
>>
A large dead tree loomed above them, a single swaying rope the only movement in the clearing. One man moved a chair underneath it while the others roughly tied her feet together so she wouldn't kick. None of them bothered with a bag to cover her eyes. That privilege reserved for humans. Something sick grew in her stomach as they forced her to stand in place on the chair. She wheezed as her breath left her… please, please no…

"I'll make you sorry!" she screamed until her voice was hoarse. One of them stood next to her to bring the rope down to her height. He held her shaking head tight in his hands as he tugged the noose around her neck.

She was trembling.

Seven faces surrounded her, leering out of the shadows.

Not one flinched when the chair was removed.

Sad stuff going on in this thread.

So, what do you guys think happened after the movie. Will Norman stop getting bullied by his peers? Will his powers grow stronger? Even Aggie was able to place a curse for some reason, so it's definitely something more than just being able to see ghosts.

Will Norman get the big Babcock butt when he gets older?
>>
>>83819406
Because she WAS a witch.
>>
>>83819443
She wasn't a "witch," though. Some genetic trait in their family just lets them see ghosts, eventually it passed to Norman. It does seem the power can grow to be stronger than that, though.

I also liked the redemptive aspects of the film. Forgiveness and healing are two very overlooked themes in most pop culture these days, which I think is a missed opportunity, especially when society and the world at large are as fractured as they are right now.

I think three childrens' souls being trapped in a demon's dimension for hundreds of years in some cases is worse than one girl being killed for witchcraft.

Nobody else seems to agree with me that one of the major morals of the story is, "Being bullied doesn't give you the right to take out your frustrations on others." They all just see a poor little victimized girl and a bunch of mean old men. Meanwhile, I thought there was an important parallel between her and Norman in his treatment of his fat friend.
>>
>>83821682
I don't see how anyone could disagree with you. Norman said almost exactly that when in the end. He had every opportunity to shun and shut out the town that did the same to him but didn't. Everything he did was for their sake.

Well, to resume, watching dead people and those kinds of powers are seen very VERY poorly in the Bible, they aren't gifts from the big G but from below.

Also, ghost don't exist, they are Demins, dissapoimting your parents, not being a good social goy etc, really they cared much more about the paranormal stuff than the gay bit at the end wich was barely mentioned.

They just talk about it for 10 min or so, it was not the.main focis of the fucking 2 hours borefest church is.

They were talking about ocultism due some economic/drug problems a family had due to this apparently, instead of blaming it on their turd genetics.
>>
Kubo - like all Laika movies - visually looks fantastic. The animation is so good I sometimes doubt that it's stop motion.
