Today was my last day of instruction and I'm celebrating by getting drunk as fuck and storytiming one of my favorite Superman stories.
Strap in, kiddos. Class is in session.
This is probably my favorite Superman story
>>83806837
For those of you following Johnny Walker's 52 storytime, this also follows up on what happened following the end of Infinite Crisis, but happens after the events of 52 itself.
>>83806864
>>83806856
I first read this in my local library, I had realized that I hadn't read hardly anything of solo Superman comics and decided to fix that one summer while my parents' house was under construction and it was too damn noisy to stay cooped up there.
Pick up this comic, Birthright, Secret Identity and Loeb's Superman/Batman. All great reads.
>>83806920
Hot pretzels and mustard are god-tier, btw.
>>83806943
I'd argue Johns writes Lex Luthor more consistently and competently than Supes himself. He's such a gloriously petty shitbag.
>>83806993
This is also one of the reasons why Act of God infuriates so many people. Take the superpowers away from Clark and he doesn't mope around, he just goes out and becomes the best goddamn journalist in Metropolis instead.
>>83806856
it's fucking amazing but I prefer Back in Action.
whatchu teach dude
>>83807086
>>83807100
Middle school science. Covers a bit of everything from earth/space science to life sciences to physics and chemistry. That's why I like it even if the kids can be little snots
>>83807144
nice. i was considering doing something with teaching but i dont think i could cover that wide range of topics effectively. likely have to go up to high school and teach just bio, nothing else.
only problem with that is most high school kids are pretty much crap
>>83806856
This..
>>83807246
>>83807232
I actually started out my Masters' program intending to teach high school Biology, but I wound up liking the broad topics that middle school handles more. And yeah, high school students are really hard to deal with sometimes.
>>83807296
Issue #2
>>83807373
I love this page. Especially compared to Lex beating the shit out of depowered Clark Kent immediately before.
>>83807467
And yep, whenever left to his own devices, Luthor ALWAYS tries to take over the world, with or without Superman in his way.
He just can't help it.
>>83807672
I think Hal still takes the cake for balls-to-the-wall daredevil craziness.
>>83807700
Admit it Lex.
You're jealous~
>>83807786
Hal's hand looks really... off here.
>>83807875
Issue #3!
As always, bumps and discussion are welcome.
>>83806837
OP, you're the man
>>83808025
>>83808036
Always happy to put good stories on the board for other people to enjoy.
>>83808090
I have a soft spot for villains like this guy. They don't want to take over the world or destroy existence or anything like that. They're just bored.
>>83808368
Fucking Toyman.
>>83808433
I'm going to take a quick break to make some tea and then I'll be back to continue.
>>83806837
Literally good DC: the arc
So who is mostly responsible for this, Johns or Busiek?
>>83808459
>>83808926
I think you can see elements of both of their styles in here. Both are very talented character writers and have an ear for understated simple every-day scenes. It's tough to differentiate the two, and I don't know if there's any commentary or interviews about this story to say for sure.
>>83808402
Ha!
>>83809233
Poor guy.
>>83809505
#5
I love the concept behind this issue, where Supes is still massively depowered, but now has to deal with all the Z-list villains that he could normally take out with the trash.
>>83809627
I think the point is that he keeps flinging himself headlong into danger and injury regardless of whether he's invulnerable or not, so the powers are necessary just to make sure he doesn't get his ass killed again.
Self-defense reflex. But that just underlines who Superman is. Even without the ability to fly and bench-press planets, he still does good with the best talents he has.
>>83809688
Bump...
>>83809688
Best Lois
>>83809788
Jimmy's grin is goddamn infectious right there.
>>83809911
And of course, Luthor is always stark raving crazy pants, but Superman pushes him to his special extremes.
>>83810040
#6! In which Luthor tries to murder massive amounts of people in order to take over the world for the second time in one year.

anyone else still reading?

>>83811204

Drunk storytiming may not have been a great idea.
>>83811250
Lex Luthor's whole character motivation in a nutshell
>>83811272
If anyone claims otherwise they're not paying attention.
>>83811292
Last issue! In which we see one of my favorite one-page summations of Supes' character.
>>83811314
>>83811325
>>83811340
I'm a sucker for these kinds of final confrontations, where you've got two exhausted guys with nothing else left except to beat the shit out of the other bare-handed.

This and Millar's Superman Adventures are pretty much the best Superman runs ever.
>>83811533
>>83811556
>>83811538
Funny how master edgelords like Miller and Ennis can give us such god-tier reflections on Superman's character regardless.
>>83811601
>>83811617
>>83811662
>>83811409
I love this fight, because Luthor should be the kind of character that gets shat on for being a dick.
>>83811675
>>83811691
I heard it phrased better before, but basically as soon as Luthor suits up to actually fight Superman himself, he has already lost.
>>83811725
>>83811740
>>83811757
>>83811774
And that's all! Thanks for following along, I hope you've enjoyed this storytime.
Thank you so much, OP. This is the kind of comic that fills me with hope. Makes me wish Superman was real.
But he is real, y'know? In a way. Everyone knows a "Superman" and everyone's got the chance to be one.
>>83811830
That's really the message of this comic after all. Do good with the talents you have, and everyone can be a Superman. You don't have to have the ability to fire lasers out of your eyes to help out the people around you.
>>83806971
"I'll get even!" is one of Luthor's character phrases. And I agree, I think Johns's Luthor is a great balance between classic Luthor and the 80s rehash.
>>83806837
Goddamn it I miss this outfit so damn much.
>>83807063
One thing that infuriates me is how people have backed away from Johns's characterizing of Metropolis.
I LOVE how he embraced the city of tomorrow and I hope it comes back some day.
>>83806971
>Black Adam
>Luthor
>Cold
>Zolomon
>Sinestro
>Manta
Why is he just so great at writing hatable yet lovable villains?
>>83812943
Eh sometimes he tries to force that formula where it doesn't belong (see: Anti-Monitor).
>>83807467
>>83807500
ahhhh when Journalism still worked that way
>>83806856
I find this book extremely overrated and forgettable. I always end up re-reading it, thinking I haven't read it before, then it comes back to me, but I'm never impressed. The best part is the fight between him and Lex at the end, and you don't even need to read the rest of the book for that to make sense.
>>83812943
Johns loves his villainfus
Thanks, OP.
bumping for others.

>best Fortress of Solitude
Thanks TA, a great read.
>>83807144
Making Clark Peter
Nice.
>>83809657
THAT concept is better shown in Back in Action, where he's de-powered again but throws himself into a sure-death situation.
If you do another story time, then please remember that arc.

It's a bedroom community for an extremely large urban area, so most of my kids are actually pretty rich, but yeah it's predominantly black.
>>83823151
So it's a private school for black kids?
>>83823163
No, public. But the district where it's located is pretty wealthy.
