some people just plain don't seek out social engaements or interactions, and that's fine.

But sometimes it's necessary to fucking function in society, and practice helps you alleviate a lot of the anxiety that comes from being a socially awkward person unfamiliar with how to introduce yourself and make small talk.

God, I can smell your tumblr from here. But alright.

The problem with these kind of words is that it invariably turns into a manner of code-speak, where the terminology is needlessly different for the sake of being different. Due to this, the new terminology will rarely be used outside of the in-group, because the outgroup already has perfectly adequate terms for the phenomena in question. So what you have is a situation where different social groups use different terms for the same things, which ends up underlining the differences rather than normalizing them, furthering the social divide between the groups. It isn't helping anyone.

This is what you sound like.

The language of traditional psychology was full of problematic words like "imbecile", "retard", and "invalid." Words that were meant to oppress and belittle, not to increase understanding.

Personally African American is stupid. Black is so much easier and isn't completely useless in context to blacks who aren't American.
And isn't the issue that all these words just end up becoming belittling and "oppressive" because they become insults. Ultimately the issue being that people want to liken peoples stupidity to mental retardation. If nuerodiverse ever catches on it'll probably just get added onto the list.

>Why should we call niggers "african americans" when we already have a perfectly good word for 'em?
This is kind of a poor example in regards to your original argument, isn't it, given that the word in question is currently often used by the in-group to refer to themselves. And "african-american" is dumb for a variety of reasons.

The thing is: words like "retard" are currently insults because people wish to insult others by implying that they belong to the same category as those "marginalized groups". The word itself is meaningless, it's just a label. "Retard" isn't an insult due to any inherent quality in the word, it's an insult due to its relation to retarded people. If there was a different word with the same history of usage, it would have ended up the same way. The thing you tumblrinas never understand is that it was never about the words themselves, it was about the people. You can change the words, but that won't change the opinions.

The problem is you're focusing on all the things autistic people can't do, and ignoring all the things they can do well. Many autistic people have trouble finding employment, no doubt due to the prejudices of people like you.

In my opinion, neurodiversity is just as important as ethnoreligious diversity.

Where's this from, Action Philosophers?

So, you mean not important and, in fact, crippling and destructive to society.

Will we still be capitalist society when robots replace humans in almost every job?
>>
>>83804302
Motherfucking this. Not to mention, Autism is not even meant to be "cured". Most of the evil things people think Autism is comes from Autism Speaks, and they can all go to Hell.
>>
>>83804302
When you say that "neurodiversity is important", do you mean that acceptance of autists is important, or that it is important for autists to exist? Because so far the word has been used to describe the nature of autistic brains. Do you now see why this terminology is confusing?

Also, can you explain WHY ethnoreligious diversity is beneficial for a society?

>The language of traditional psychology was full of problematic words like "imbecile", "retard", and "invalid." Words that were meant to oppress and belittle, not to increase understanding.

No, they BECAME problematic because of what they meant. They STARTED OUT entirely neutral.
>>
>>83804491
>because you can't get disability money if you're just a retard.
Really? How the fuck does that happen? What kind of jobs are retards capable of holding down?
>>

>Their feelings don't override the scientific method and peer review process though.
I don't think they're asking for a scientific term. The word "pressure" is perfectly usable even when not describing the effect of force over an area.

I don't understand the point this comic is trying to make.

>Unfortunately

Yeah, it's real "unfortunate" that more people can get the support that they need.

Why did you even major in psychology, if you hate autistic people this much?

Simply being stupid, in and of itself, isn't a disability, until you get to below about ChrisChan levels. Also for example, you don't qualify for services at colleges for simply having a low IQ.

So for example, someone with an IQ of about 85, who isn't retarded enough to qualify for a disability on that alone, who otherwise would not get into a college, can get in on all that financial aid money, social security, ect.

>What kind of jobs are retards capable of holding down?
Manual labor. Janitorial. Some agricultural. Some trades.

>>83804585
No. They are demanding specific changes to diagnostics, to definitions and to government provided services.

I double checked, and here's an example of the problem with the dude's spectrum. The cartoonist is taking his shit from something like this: Designed for teachers to help kids develop their skills, and to be functional people in society. Useful, but not very accurate.
>>
>>83803716
>By calling something "problematic", you've essentially labeled something as BADWRONG without presenting any arguments as to why.

That's funny to me because 4chan seems to operate exclusively using this method ie: cuck, regressive left, tumblr, nu-male, beta, etc.
>>
>>83805029
>Manual labor. Janitorial. Some agricultural. Some trades.
Oh, I see. Sorry, I thinking more along the lines of Downs Syndrome. I assume that's a very different classification.
>>
>>83805056
Difference is that those are local terms or in-jokes. Nobody wants that shit to go anywhere else. The minute cuck becomes popular on Reddit, something else will take its place. Same as has happened every year for the past 13 fucking years.
>>
>>83805056
And it's 4chan, a place that practically celebrates its ability to senselessly hurl insults without a care of furthering any kind of conversation. Using these terms in real life will get you nowhere. As they should.
>>
>>83804491
>its also very possible to be severely non functional in many of those regions and not have autism at all

So you'd have what then? Downs?
>>
>>83805143
>The minute cuck becomes popular on Reddit
Dude, the entire internet from twitter to reddit uses "cuck". Hell, the NYT and the WaPo have written articles on it.

But my mom always gets kind of pissy when I try to suggest I don't have it, and I get benefits for it, so shrugever.

.continued.

Now here's what the autistic spectrum actually looks like. Top is the older model. Bottom is the autism spectrum model.

>>83805078
Right. I'm not talking about full potato. And by the way, some of the downs syndrome people actually are functional enough to work, hold jobs, run fighting game tournaments. I'm talking more about people with IQs in the range of about 80-110.

Even someone at Chris Chan's level of functionality could probably work out well enough, with say a very good 'tard wrangler.

>>83804668
A predictable quickdraw on the bigotry charge.

Science and medicine rely on truthful, accurate diagnoses. Giving the wrong support is frequently worse than doing nothing at all. Just look at the piles and piles of bullshit ADHD cases that we loaded up with amphetamines and stimulants.

Diagnosis shopping, by parents or people who want to avoid stamped a retard, people who want to justify their behavior, or use disability rights as an excuse to behave badly, or just because it's trendy, or worse, people who want an out for their blatantly criminal behavior.

All that also hurts the ability of people to get the services they need.

By the way, they changed mental retardation to intellectual disabilities, for you shitposters staying ahead of the language curve.

>>83805198
That's one example. If you have downs, you will frequently suck at many of the things on OP's spectrum to a disability level, and still not have autism. See this chart for other things that are adjacent, but not autism spectrum.

>>83805494
It's designed for teachers working with 5-12 year olds.

>>83804456
>Autism is not even meant to be "cured".
I'm going to disagree with you on this point, except that that the idea of "cured", is sort of idiotic when talking about autisim.

I'd settle for "At least more functional than Chris Chan" for a lot of people.

> Autism Speaks, and they can all go to Hell.
Them, and the Tarjan center.
>>
>>83805707
>I've often wondered if the diagnosis is even right for me.
>But my mom always gets kind of pissy when I try to suggest I don't have it

She probably had you diagnosed for the benefits because you were borderline-poor. Single mom, I'm guessing?
>>
>>83805707
More psyfag.

Diagnosis shouldn't change the fundamentals: You can work on your strengths, work on your weaknesses, compensate for your weaknesses, and be the best, most functional person you can be.

If there's shit you can't do, that you want to be able to do, you put in the work at it.

I mean, if you spent the next 10 years studying X, you'd expect to get better at it right? So, if you suck at reading facial expressions, watching episodes of say, cops, or judge judy, and focusing on the faces, and learning about that shit, even if you're still horrible, you're still probably going to be better off than where you started.
>>
>>83805975
Maybe.

I've never had trouble reading faces though. Again you seem to be thinking entirely in terms of the classical stereotype, which tells us that poor nonverbal communication is a fundamental part of what it means to be on the spectrum.
>>
>>83806159
It's an example. Alright. Clearly contextualization is something you're bad at. Here's an idea. Completely serious. Go to /pol/, and lurk, and try to guess how serious/sarcastic/other agenda the OP is.
