The majority of characters in western medium are recognizable. I don't know if you're trying to prove something by posting SU or what provoked this, but pic related example, the only time people couldn't name a character in this list is because they've never seen the show, not because they have a poor silhouette.

You can have a strong silhouette and still have a really shitty design. It's called "appeal" and most western cartoons seem to lack it in their in-house studio style. There's a reason why the characters in something like Nichijou or Zootopia are nicer to look at than Clarence.

I know this is bait, but I think the silhouette idea behind character design is horribly misunderstood and it bothers me so much.

You use silhouette to check the design, and adjust it so that the character is better balanced.

This idea that "if you recognize the character's silhouette then it's all good" is fallacious because you could make extremely ugly characters with very complex silhouettes and they'd register all right, but their design would still be hideous.

I think silhouettes are more used to recognize the character within the cast of its own world, also to recognize shapes and sizes that give those characters "character".

Recognizable silhouettes wouldbe more used in mascot characters, since they are like a logo

Soldier and acout are somewhat similar in terms of silhouette (despite the RPG). Also soldier and demoman.

They should have made soldier shorter, that way there would be no confusion.

But this is nitpicking. A++ design, Valve. It's nice to see someone putting cartoon principles that existed since the fucking 1920s to good use.

soldier is much shorter than the demoman, and the big rocket launcher is a significant part of his readability.

The scout in the game has a shotgun, which is a much smaller profile than the nailgun in that image and his stance is the shortest of any character, plus his frame is the thinnest of any character.

Demoman holds his launchers lower than the soldier does his rocket launcher. And the demoman's head shows up very little on the silhouette. His body armor makes him look very trapezoidal. His legs are also much longer than the soldier's

Despite what >>83799646 said, Valve quickly learned that unique clothing features, animations, and voices / sounds are more important in all cases than a character's outline.

Sniper's outline wielding jarate is basically Spy with a hat, but in detail, you know the difference between the two by the way their clothing features and the way they animate. For example, Spy's mask and Sniper's shades are very quick and easy ways to tell them apart, and you'll never see those in an outline.

Like >>83803248 pointed out, silhouette tests weren't intended to be used for character design - certainly not as an end-all, be-all design test - so much as test to check the clarity and dynamism of a given scene. I have no idea why so many people have latched onto the silhouette test when in comes to character design, but there does seem to be a lot of confusion on how it's supposed to work.

Though that being said, I've noticed from a lot of characters from current cartoons have a quite a few of anti-silhouette designs. Characters like Star Butterfly, Princess Bubblegum, and Marceline don't read very well in silhouette because their hair covers up most of their bodies and often makes them look like giant blobs, while other character look like giant potato sack bodies with noodle/stick arms that make their overall outlines look very stiff and unwieldy. But this might be because the people making these images don't seem to know how silhouette tests are supposed to work,

There's something worth knowing.

This whole argument reminds me of modern composers and their obsessions with chords and chord progressions, as if they hold some vague key to success.

what the fuck sort of original image were you using for Haruhi

and why did you think fucking anybody would know a human from Hamtaro after all these years

Laura's hair sticks out as much as Lisa Simpson's hair.

I made the image myself.

OP here again. Thanks for your help folks. I was not even aware silhouette test was a thing in studios. Now will improve my own cartoon.

PS: I came up with this thread seeing my shadow, after hours drawing character searches for nothing.
PS: Shadows are the closest things to 2d drawings in nature, brain must have been trained to notice them in any drawing.

>>83803184
I see a lot of people on /co/ espousing things like this. By-the-book adherence to guidelines and principles seems to be more important than actually making things look any good.

the difference is that nobody watched Hamtaro, but everybody knows the Simpsons.

Also, it defeats the purpose when you draw a character off-model, and/or in a shitty pose.

now THIS is a Haruhi silhouette, in fact it's so iconic they use it as the goddamn logo.

It's the first thing you notice about any moving object - not the object itself, but what it displaces and casts around it.

Hamtaro got 6 seasons, people did watched it.

It is not a shitty pose, Virgil Ross would of done the same thing (Rod Scribner would of made it sloppy and I need a pen input to match that of Bob McKimson).

Maybe to people who adore the show, but I've seen enough anime and played enough JRPGs to insert like a dozen different characters into that silhouette.

Yeah pretty much, silhouettes for testing out character designs are useful when looking to see if the design is balanced overall, but it was intended more for poses/action and it definitely shouldn't be treated as if it's the only part of character design that matters.

I honestly though it was supposed to be one of those elves from either the Rice Krispy or the Keebler commercials. It looked like giant elf ears and mitten hands.

It's not our fault you suck at this.

Overwatch stumbles a bit in raw silhouettes given they have 20 some characters to TF2's like 9, but they make up for it in making each character animate very distinctly. DVA outside her mech and Tracer look pretty damn close to eachother, but the way they run makes them instantly distinguishable.
>>
>>83805864
Don't they also have skins in Overwatch, which technically fucks silhouettes over entirely?

A predictable response.

People put so much stock in Internet hearsay that they're just flabbergasted when someone questions it. Surely they must be baiting, how could anyone doubt that anime is full of sameface when so many people say it is. The wisdom of the crowd is never wrong.

>>83805949
Not really. Even with legendary skins, they don't alter the most important and distinguishing characteristics. This is helped my each character's unique movement animation. If McCree is wearing a skin that completely changes his clothes, you can still tell it's him from the way he moves. McCree's Mystery Man and Vigilante skins are probably the biggest departures that you might have trouble distinguishing from far away.
>>
>>83805949
Yeah, and that changes any silhouette differences clothing usually gives. They're much more about achieving instant distinction through their stances and animations. Reaper and Zarya are pretty close in size and don't have much to distinct them clothing wise, especially with Zarya's winter coat skin, but no one is going to mistake Reaper's 2 guns forward walk for Zarya's hunched over carrying a massive weight walk.

I say it's because of TF2. That was a huge part of their design philosophy and it helped a lot and TF2 was and is still popular as shit. I think the problem though is that as you said, it works in the products given work, or in TF2 case helps a lot more since the objects have a much greater range of motion and working a full 3D world. Since cartoons generally work in 2D plans and the focus is entirly on them there isn't much of a point for them to care about it since it's not like they are going away or need to tell a much deeper point to them.
