Stupid questions like this could have been easily avoided by showing a fried cricket stand at the fair in the opening scene or at least showed Gideon munching on some insect based festival food while he heckled Judy. The only clue we have is trash from buga burger that I have heard exists but never seen myself and word of god. I saw Fish Town at the start of the movie, which is good because those who catch it understand at least some of what preds eat, but really the film is almost completely devoid of explanation in that aspect and blends into the background with the rest of the world building and more that makes the movie so great.

I think it shouldn't be the main component of the narrative, but it should still be woven throughout the main story so it doesn't feel like there are two separate stories happening at the same time. There should be the main problem that Nick and Judy are trying to solve, but at the same time they are also trying to figure out what their relationship is and what their feelings for each other are. The events of that main story pillar ultimately push their relationship along. Basically, keep doing what they were doing in the first movie, with their relationship growing in a way that feels natural, although they take it to the next level.
If they assemble the same creative team as last time, they have my trust to get it right. The first movie showed us two charming characters with great chemistry that ultimately brews into a beautiful friendship, and the door is left open to the possibility that they might be more than friends with a little more time. In the sequel, they'll have had more time.

as for the wilde times was the only fun scene in that movie, that's why they liked it so much.

proto-zootopia's plot wasn't even that dark. there's a lot of other shit that's more depressing and darker than proto-zootopia ever was.
and because it's a talking animal movie doesn't mean that it has to be done a certain way. I would have been fine with the original idea, and it's not like no one has ever done a "darker" talking animal story before.
I understand why they changed it. because disney isn't a dark brand and because they need to sell it to 8 year olds and I doubt many of their parents would have taken them to the depressing disney movie. but it doesn't mean that the original idea was bad just that it wasn't what disney wanted.

Interspecies relationships was already confirmed as acceptable in Zootopia so it's highly unlikely we'll get that forbidden romance thing.
It's also the only way population growth could conceivably be manageable in a society where some families can have hundreds of children. Mammals have human-like lifespans and long childhoods, since we know Judy is in her twenties in human years and has aged at the same rate as Gideon. But since mammals are living in a human-like society, they aren't dying, they're living to old age. The only way for there to be a sustainable population when there exists families like the Hopps is for the vast majority of fast-breeding mammals to never reproduce. Why would a bias against interspecies relationships ever develop for rabbits if overpopulation is a serious risk the moment they stop dying to predators? They might have a bias against predators, but getting with sheep and other prey animals provides a natural form of birth control well before condoms could be invented.
And, well, everyone is sapient and socializing like humans. It has to happen constantly.
