Because they always wanted to set the show in the S2 era with a 'lived in' superhero universe, but CN thought that would be too confusing for viewers and insisted that the first season be about the first generation of sidekicks forming a team.
Season 2 is what the producers always intended to show to be. Season 1 and the Light plot was... filler.

It was all ideas and designs but garbage execution. The first half of the first season suffered from obnoxious main characters but they slowly got better by the end. Then the second season came around and they add another dozen characters more one note and annoying then the last. Solid 6/10
