What frustrates me is that he clearly has an Encyclopedic like knowledge of classic animation and cartooning. I'm not that other anon but I've worked professionally as an animation artist for a long time now and I can tell you there are A LOT of people in this industry who cause lots of drama and make it so that working on cartoons is a painful endeavor.
For example at the start of my career I had worked with this very insecure psycho-manipulate man child who had severe problems and took offense to literally everything. He constantly caused fights with his friends, co workers, clients and one day I decided to I just got sick of his fucking bullshit and quit. That was nearly 2 years ago. He still tries to slander me and start fights to this day.

The 'Calarts' style has little anything to do with Calarts. I remember an actual Calarts thread full of people's projects being full of genuinely great stuff. It's just an incredibly easy to animate and simplistic style that I believe is some almalgamation of Scott Pilgrim and Adventure Time that a lot of people these seem fond of unfortunately thank to the incredible influence those two series had on people. The passion for animating itself seems to be rather lost at this time outside of hobbyists who work for themselves and fun. It's more about making something fast and lucrative nowadays. Usually see good animators with style on youtube or tumblr. Idea guys get to make the tv shows.

When I was younger my mother wouldn't let me watch Ren & Stimpy, or any other shock-value-show, and for the longest time that was really my only drive to watch it: I wasn't allowed to.
The Ripping friends began airing at about the same time my parents stopped monitoring my media intake, and while I didn't know it was JK at the time I watched it, and any cartoon that read like "one of those shows I'm not supposed to watch," for exactly that reason. Of them all, Rocko's Modern Life is the only one I have any fond memories of, and The Ripping Friends seems to have been definitively forgettable.
I'd end up binge watching around 10~15 episodes of Ren & Stimpy later on, only to find myself laughing maybe once per-episode at best. Everything was either blunt shock-value and bland puns/plays-on-words.

My biggest disappointment about any of these hardasses is that you don't see a lot of them shifting into teaching late in their lives. Bitching about stuff on the internet or to interviewers isn't really going to make you influential in the medium you care about. Making stuff and hoping people develop the technical skills to imitate it on their own is also not terribly efficient.
A lot of the stagnation in American comics and animation has to do with the old masters literally dying and not being adequately replaced in their capacity as mentors. Also with art education being shit and starting late in general.

Spumco was supposed to be the Bob Clampett of the 1990s. They arguably succeeded.
Studio Ghibli did far less to advance animation than Walt Disney's Nine Old Men. Ghibli specializes in stuff morphing and exploding, which is more special effects and less character animation. Animation is supposed to be acting and believability. Flesh turning into tendrils and stuff exploding is really no big achievement. Stuff like Paprika and that episode about Clayface in BTAS all ends up in the waste-bin of animation history. They look kinda neat but they're devoid of actual character animation.
