Stopped watching it for long time since the Chinese Olympic episode. I'm caught up now but I don't enjoy it as much.

I remember the earlier seasons though being goofy about just whatever they felt like doing, as opposed to the current events and trends at the time. Am I remembering it correctly?

They always tackled current events but were better at it in the sense that once the event stopped being current the episode still made sense as a standalone episode. A lot of modern South Park episodes will probably age poorly once the topic they're discussing no longer exists.
Though there were still more silly nonsense episodes in general back then.

It's just not as funny as it use to be. I feel like Cartman's antics are more obscure and they don't really deliver like they use to. Stan and Kyle I could care less about, they're boring as fuck characters. I did enjoy the episodes if Stan's dad took place in it though.
