Because people know deep down they should be better people, and when they see someone doing good and being better they are reminded of just how much less they are than they could be. I can't speak for others but as a Superman fan I don't. I enjoyed this scene as an example of those who believe themselves staunchly correct due to Might Makes Right being rectified in their belief.
Anyone sorely due for a spanking is always deserving of it. I don't much care who they were before becoming pompous. You don't get to be a fat cunt all day long and then cry foul when you get shafted for it.
Remember, or read the comic if you haven't outside these few panels, at this point Superman had repeatedly blamed Batman for things he couldn't control, brutally killed Ollie for accidentally endangering the Kents instead of even helping Jonathan, allowed his own stubbornness to infect the morals of others like Flash and Billy to unspeakable actions such as assisting in holding Atlantis hostage to put Arthur in place and broke Bruce's back out of sheer spite.
Getting savaged by someone of such moral caliber and mercy as Alfred is not even half of what he deserved for all he did.
