She got called out by Athame, has an unrequited crush, and is generally a sensitive high schooler that wants to fit in to the point of having tunnel vision and not seeing the people that do care about her. It's easy to take offense to things easily when you're insecure. Very easy.

I say that as someone that suffered the same problems, though I more or less got a kick in the pants through chance and am more aware of my surroundings now. Ellory hasn't had that.

I'm a relatively newer reader, so I was unaware.

Also I know she's not being judged, but it's easy to fall into the mindset that someone's always looking and might catch you slipping up or doing something embarrassing or be judging you when you're insecure. To the point that sometimes you don't want to even be out in public at all.

wasn't she kind of a bitch to that nerd guy

>I don't have time to coddle him for 1000th time

Haven't read through this in awhile but pretty sure she never even really noticed him at all.

As much as I like Ellroy I like the running theory that's she's actually a self centered bitch who doesn't care about anyone but herself.

>apathetically rejects nerd
>her friend who's being emotionally abused at home isn't worth her fucking time
>openly rude to her own mother

Most of these lonely loser types often do shit and treat others in a certain way that causes them to be alone. It's typically their own fault and I'd like the story to reflect that.
>>
>>83728633
She's an asshole without opportunity.

You know the sort; people that would go from tolerably pathetic to total mustache-twirling evil jackasses if they somehow managed to find personal success.
>>
>>83728228
But Kevin didn't give a fuck about people judge him.
>>
>>83728633
The thing about social skills is that you need to socialize to develop them and that's hard to do without social skills. The only thing she could have realistically done is flush her standards down the shitter and hang out with turbo-nerds and other social misfits who would have her.

She's so concentrated on how people make her feel that she doesn't understand that no one hurts her on purpose. That's why it's so foreign for her to make an effort to make someone feel good because she doesn't think anyone ever does that for her. She also suffers from lack of empathy which is a result of her not socializing much.
>>
>>83729586
This. People don't realize poor socialization can snowball hard, but also want to claim they don't owe it to poorly socialized people to go out of the way to prevent that snowballing. Gwen is the rear exception.

Keep a respectful distance from those who would steal your peace and serenity. In your daily life, you will run into this type of person around every comer. These people are not necessarily cunning or ruthless, nor are they a real threat to your career and personal objectives but they are eternally annoying.

They operate by thriving on their own inferiority. Their actions and words are very cutting, even though people are nice to them. They also are gutless. On the one hand, they play up to the ruthless and cunning types who treat them like dirt and yet, they are mean to people who are decent and kind to them. These serenity stealers are people to be avoided. Life put them in a place which they resent because they feel it is beneath them. To get even with life, they react by attacking those who are nice to them while being very agreeable to those who abuse them.

They cannot help themselves; their actions are involuntary. The serenity stealers steal into your heart and confidence with their sweet, charming exteriors. But after you allow them to get close to you, they will snap at you in order to diminish you in their eyes. They try to temporarily elevate their own Utter power and feel good for a moment, but are usually remorseful afterwards. They can't help themselves and so the pattern continues.

However, it is important not to interact with them in a similar manner. If you do, they will make a lifetime career of attacking you. These people are masters of "death by a 1,000 cuts." You should always keep them at arm's length. Then they will eternally respect you and solicit your friendship. They will then transfer this troublesome energy to someone else.

Human beings are very complex. You never know when your words and actions will be considered deeply offensive. Whether your intention is to offend or flatter, it will always be interpreted according to each person's private perception of themselves and your intention has very little consequence in their reality.

Mary Ann is a forty-five-year old single lady. She grew up with a dominating mother and an abusive father. After twenty years of university schooling, she obtained three masters degrees in the areas of Urban Development, Asian studies, and Business Administration. However, she had difficulty in applying her schooling to the professional job market. She showed no interest in entering any profession for which she had studied. As a result, she worked as a part-time word processing clerk in an attorney's office for fifteen dollars per hour. Whenever Chin-Ning saw her, she would complain about how tough her life was, how much she needed more money, and how awful her living conditions were. He always encouraged her by praising her ability to obtain three masters degrees while others were having difficulty earning one. He told her everything would work out. It seemed his words always brightened her day.
>>
>>83735594
On one occasion, while walking on the street with a friend of his, they met with Mary Ann. After the formality of introductions he had the idea that his friend might be able to use Mary Ann in his office. Since Mary Ann only worked twenty hours weekly, she would be able to increase her income, thereby solving some of her financial problems.

With Mary Ann standing there, he proceeded to promote her abilities and encourage his friend to use her in his office. That evening when he arrived home, Mary Ann telephoned him. She was shaking with anger. She was totally insulted by Chin-Ning telling his friend that she was a skillful word processor. Never had it entered his mind that Mary Ann felt so deeply inferior about the job she had been doing for the past ten years that she had to hide it from others.

He didn't realize at the time that due to Mary Ann's lack of professional accomplishments, she harbored deep feelings of inferiority. She did not know how to alter her present circumstances and had consequently grown bitter. For people like Mary Ann, praise and acknowledgment are the only rewards that make life worth living. If anything is said or done to make them feel inferior, their sweet, gentle nature will instantly disappear into furious anger.

I was a bit like that in middle school. Then I had an epiphany that I just didn't guve a fuck what anyone thought other than like three people that I actually hung out with, and gave up trying to be impressive or preserve imaginary dignity.

I ended up modestly popular enough that people I didn't know always seemed to know me though.

The cause of that line of thought was when I was worried about what clothes to wear come winter since I had this idea in my head everyone would think I was poor if I wore the same clothes all year, which resulted in me thinking long and hard about why it mattered and how little I actually judged anyone else on anything.

>It’s easy to feel tough when the only people you know are nice to you. You can be abusive and confuse that with being powerful. You can be arrogant and confuse that with being smart. And for some very weak people those moments are all they have to build their confidence with before it shatters under scrutiny.
And that can become the origin of a horrible person.

>And that can become the origin of a horrible person.
>Unless they don’t want to be a horrible person

You're describing the typical workplace. A lot of people are duplicitous like that. Heck, the notorious "Blue eyes--Brown eyes" exercise shows just how cruel and vindictive kids can so easily become. (Kids are always cruel, this is not new information.) And then there's the Stanford prison experiment. (Hardly an experiment.) I mean, sure, granted that in both cases it's a higher authority coercing others towards sadism and cruelty. But that just teaches that it doesn't take much to pit people against each other depending on their temperament. And that level of malevolent creativity, social dominance orientation, and crowd manipulation is the very foundation of Machiavellianism.

What I'm trying to stutter out is, I want to make an unsolicited recommendation of the Gormenghast series by Mervyn Peake. Then you get to see the origin of a really, really horrible person.

Fuck noble goals. The only thing that's important in life is personal success through demonstrating competence according to social standards, and attaining social status and prestige, control or dominance over people and resources. Preserving and enhancing the interests of others, as well as understanding, appreciating, tolerating, and protecting the welfare of all people is counterproductive to your own objectives.

Why can't you see things the proper way; surely that fierce inferiority complex and chip on both shoulders is more than sufficient?

I think my mother is sort of like that except that she is a brilliant social manipulator. My sister learned first how to deal with her by always leaving at least a bit of hostility towards her but took longer for me as my tendency is to be nice to people (probably just my desire to be loved). The thing is that usually my mother is very nice and generous to people but the moment she takes people's affection as granted she start manipulating them. Playing the victim, guilty tripping to menacing people and even violence if she thinks she can get away with it. By keeping a constant threat of rejection we can keep her in the "nice" mode most of the time just like she does with strangers.
>>
>>83740110
>I think my mother
>mother
That's catty, vindictive, overbearing mothers, with their toxic personalities in general. I mean, you young guys with a history of mental illness, maltreatment, possible prior admittance to psychiatric care, substance abuse, etc., are nothing when compared to how mothers can be. Often enough it's because of mothers like that which cause you to be what you damn well are: well on your way to becoming Norman Bates, or something very much like that. That's not a technical term in any of the behavioural sciences, but it's fun to throw around a great big throbbing Hitchcock.

They're always nice to strangers -- when it's convenient to them. They do it often enough that they seem so much like a different person entirely. You might have never suspected the horrible, terrible things they get up to when it suddenly suits their purposes.

Some guys actually went ahead and did the unthinkable. They actually murdered their own mothers. (Tragic.) Of course, they said the usual thing, that they, "don't have the guts to do it". But they did. It certainly isn't the kind of case the barrister was ever happy to have to deal with the first time, or the second.

Isn't that kinda the point? That she's miserable, but her own choices are the reason for it, because instead of looking back and reconsidering her opinions and poor choices, she chooses to dwell on them as some sort of unchangeable fate of the universe that is all working to ruin her shit?

I realize she's depressed, and I realize a lot of people are depressed--but there's a lot of people like Ellory who are depressed but purposely refusing to be anything else because of their own unseen ego. Egotism can make people very depressed, surprisingly. The fear of judgement often is the result of an unseen but very large ego--they don't want their idea about themselves challenged.

No, that's what very sad and unhappy people believe of themselves in their myopic worldview: That people are just trying to molly them or coddle them, patronise or condescend them, and so on.

>>83744607
>Goddamn, but you must be TERRIFYINGLY bad at social interactions.
....I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you hadn't actually read what was posted. A person's perception's are painted by their feelings: (i) If a person feels like shit, then it stands to follow that everything out from their eyes looks like shit, (ii) and so someone trying to be nice to them can and often will be misconstrued in the very worst possible way i.e., that they have an ulterior motive in mind. You can see this in the people who lash out at others in paranoia. But of course, in the richly diverse variety of pathologies, you also get people who are so starved are so hungry, so thirsty, for appreciation that they will swallow anything, and are thus easy prey to the manipulations of very real predators.

Then again, that often isn't far from the truth... After all, that's just what people do. They just want to silence you, keep you at their behest. You're disposable after all, just kept around to inflate their own ego. Is that unusual? No. Many people are like that. All people often want is an eager listener to offload their emotional baggage, or someone to take advantage of in some other way.

Did you ever stop to think that a dog is the only animal that doesn't have to work for a living? A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving you nothing but 'love'.

What. A. Con.

You never read a book on psychology, Dog. You didn't need to. You knew by some divine instinct how to con affection from people. They know just what to do: they are so glad to see us that they almost jump out of their skins. So, naturally, we are glad to see them. That is why dogs make such a hit.

You chronic melancholics could learn a thing or two from dogs.

I can't imagine what sort of grudge or grievance you have that would so readily provoke you to post such a kneejerk response. In every other circumstance, I would let you save face, but you've put yourself in an indefensible position. You seem to have mistaken reading with skimming. It clearly says, "that a dog is the only animal that doesn't HAVE to work for a living?" There's hardly any hair splitting to be seen there when it's been stated so explicitly. And most importantly, we are speaking in context-sensitive grammar. A man would have to suffer some kind of cognitive impairment to be taking that and other statements, like the one about canaries having to sing to stay employed, at its face value, going from the given particular to the absolute.

I'm not going to consider the possibility that you may have an autism spectrum condition. But on the off chance that you do, and that you have predisposition towards the computer sciences, I will make it clear: Our language is a linear-bounded minimal automaton and not a deterministic pushdown.

>nah you get social skills by being good and kind.
>socializing makes you into a dick.

Peer-pressure and group coercion to the max. I hate these ideas they fill kids with, like that "the complainer is always wrong" and that "the group is always right". Toxic group-think, cronyism, intimidation, oppression, systemic abuse, etc., are all problems that are never addressed. A condition of life that is never acknowledged to really exist. The kids become bystanders, easily led by opportunistic instigators, to be exploited and discarded on a whim. The cruelties of youth should prepare them for later life's cutthroat intrigues. Parents should prepare them on how to lead and how to choose who to be led by. A group that effectively cannot recognise its weakest links is a group that will fall apart under the strain of inner conflict and/or under the assault of a rival.

Schools are in dire need of updating the current curriculum. The kids will do great. They already have a grasp of lying, cheating, stealing, and the very rudiments of blackmail; and they love films like the Godfather, and pretending to play with Thompson submachine guns. It's about time they take the next step and start learning how to fill out ledgers, statements, prepare budgets, and regurgitate financial facts. These kids need to learn about the important things in life--on how to survive. They are currently being coddled and left woefully underprepared for the type of world we really live in. Their time is being spent poorly: Almost eight hours a day, for five days a week, sitting almost entirely immobile, an environment not conducive to teaching. And even when that time is being spent being taught, it is not being used efficiently, as not enough time is adequately devoted to the material, or the subject or topic is no longer being taught at the standard that it used to be decades ago.

No, I think you're overthinking the wrong things here and missing what I was trying to say.

Plenty of working dogs have to do their jobs or be put down. Most dog breeds were bred with a specific purpose and the trend of keeping dogs exclusively as useless pets is a relatively recent development in the history of dog keeping and unique to modern first world culture. When you say "a dog is the only animal that doesn't have to work for a living" one can interpret "the dog is the only (domestic) animal whose existence serves no purpose" and that's just plain untrue. Dogs evolved into companion animals and humans allowed themselves to accept dogs as solely companions over time. The dog didn't start by giving puppy eyes and just suddenly take its place as the most popular pet. It took a lot of working animals and history to get there. Its not the natural state as you implied.
>>
>>83759379
>No, I think you're over thinking the wrong things here and missing what I was trying to say.
You know what, in this case you are correct. The criticism, no matter how true, was viewed as a personal attack. My inability to handle your criticism constructively is an expression of my lack of self-confidence. I could not handle being wrong, and, unable to find a way to save face, left me desperate to find fault with the other person who felt the desire to expose me.

Or you live in rural somewhere,
or live in Alaska,
or are Amish,
or, or, or...
>>
>>83759379
>It's not the natural state as you implied.
As with most things in nature, they have no meaning in themselves, none that people are not guilty of imposing on them. They see something and attribute qualities and purposefulness. Just as you've said in the case of dogs, "The dog didn't start by giving puppy eyes and just suddenly take its place as the most popular pet. It took a lot of working animals and history to get there."

The point of the post was what people can learn about that behaviour, not about the history and genetics of dog breeding. To that point, people see a dog, and it might look back at them excitedly, as if to say, "I like you, You make me happy. I am glad to see you." People like a good smile; we know if it is false, mechanical and we resent it. I am talking about a real smile, a heart-warming smile, a smile that comes from within.

What kind of companionship can a severe, callous, ill-tempered, mean-spirited, untrustworthy person have? The upright, independent minded, noble creature that a cat is has nothing but contempt for such 'lesser beings'.

And then there's losers like John who can never get a girl and has a cat insult him all the time.

Have you heard the story about the crab and the hare? It's a great story. Once upon a time, this crab and a hare got into an argument, and then they race, but the hare doesn't notice that the crab has latched onto its tail. It isn't until the hare reached close to the finish line that it stops and realises, "Hold on a second, why am I racing a crab?" At which point it hears a little voice up ahead call out, "I won!"

What reality? That actually happens in real life.

People can't see the forest for the trees all the time. I've known people either spend years alone waiting for the "right" one, or get into dangerous, abusive relationships over more stable ones because the stable person wasn't as exciting or cute as the ticking time bomb.

It's an understandable source of frustration to a robot -- but not an excusable origin of hatred -- to see people regardless of gender whining about how lonely they are while shooting down others because they aren't "good enough" for their companionship to count as anything.
