Anything else like this? Self-contained graphic novels that focus on drama and fucked-up imagery?
Have you read Simmon's other narrative driven stuff? Like House and Jessica's Farm. He also has short story books like Habit and The Furry Trap

It's not so fucked up but it is hauntingly heartwarming, Beautiful Darkness. I don't have an image
I got a few interesting books for you to check out OP

Thanks, i'll look for them. Recently i also read Black Hole by Charles Burns. The metaphor was a little tio obvious, but his art was good and he played nice with it.
Charles Burns' Black hole is pretty much entirely fucked up imagery and late 80s teen drama. But in a really grimy, genuine way instead of a hollywood teen type of way.

Oh lol nvm

i was actually thinking about suggesting that one. definitely covers the bases of what you were looking for.
His new trilogy is great too but I'm half way thru it and it seems to be a less structured piece than Black Hole. or if it is I'm not far enough along to see how everything connects.
the art is a bit crude but the story is great.
