The way death battle works forces Batman to not fight the way he usually operates. He needs to do detective work to find out Spiderman's weaknesses and exploit them, but in order to do that he would escape in the first encounter. Death Battle is a random encounter fight to the death with no prep time, which is basically the opposite of what Batman does.

Needles isn't just a mindless psychotic though, he's fairly deliberate with how he goes and he's just as willing, if not more so, to try the impersonal, unconventional way of killing someone just to see how it looks and how different he feels.
