Is this is a good book to learn animation from?
>>83718244
How about you buy it, and find out?
>>83718244
Yes, it is an excellent book to learn from. Just remember that the book is based around experimenting and adding your own flair to what you're animating. Don't just try to copy what you see in the book frame-for-frame.
It's good but don't take everything you read from it as a rule
>>83718244
Yes, it covers the animation industries working technique as it's been developed.
Great reference book.
My animation teacher had this, I remember it was pretty solid.Wasn't it naturally called shit by John K?
>>83720693
That faggot should be glad that anything approaching this quality is given to modern art students
With the state of modern art school being what they are
It's one of the best available really. I could read Williams writing about the history of animation all day.
>>83721596
someone post it
>>83718690
>one bajillion dollars
Should definitely pirate it instead.
>>83721723
That's nothing. I earn more'n that in a day. (Prob'ly.)
>>83720693
>The Richard Williams book is a confusing mess.
>>83718244
It is one of the best and universally used as a text / required reading in every school that teaches animation in the world. Even the small community college near where I live has it on their book list for their digital animation program.
If you only bought two books for animation the ones you'd want would be that and Preston Blair's "Cartoon Animation".
>>83721723
You can get the softcover version for about $20.00. It's the 20 volume DVD set that is super expensive but that's because you're basically buying an intro to animation course that is taught by Richard Williams.
>>83721707
>>83721795
The book is $20 used or less. The DVDs are thousands of dollars.
OP you should also try Character Animation Crash Course. It'll give you the not-Richard-Williams perspective. Personally I can't stand Richard Williams's character design so his book really turns me off, even though he's a great animator, one of the greatest.

>The fat girl with trash taped to her head
I laugh every time
>>83721810
For example here's Preston Blair character design vs...
>>83722020
Richard Williams character design. But, you know, different strokes.
>>83721861
I'll check out Character Animation Crash Course after I'm done with The Animator's Survival Kit and Cartoon Animation.
>>83722427
I also have Tezuka School of Animation 1 & 2 and Timing for Animation. Not sure if those are good or not, but I'll study everything I can.
>>83718244
I have it , I can sell it to you if you want
>>83718244
Pretty much a must have book if you want to learn
Animation by Preston Blair is good too
>>83720693
This was the book we used in my intro to 2D animation class.
>>83723174
Smells like SCAD
>>83721859
Hurts everytime
has anyone read Eric Goldberg's Character Animation Crash Course?
There really isn't any reason to study animation books.
Some people are born with artistic talent and some are not.
If "LEARNING ANIMATION" is a big deal to you then you should probably try another medium to express yourself with.
>>83724143
Studying animation books is still a good idea if you're getting into comics.
>>83724021
It's a condensed version of Preston Blairs version with some extra technical tips.
They work together, but if I had to pick just one it'd probably be Prestons.
It's a great book. Also try Burne Hogarth's books about illustration. John Kricfalusi actually has some great recs on his website if you can get past the batshitness.
>>83725899
Yeah, the advice I'd give about using John K's blog is to ignore most of his complaints while taking into account the sources he recommends.
>>83718244
when I got a degree in animation, a good half the classes were build around this book. "survival kit" is a big understatement.
>>83721859
What the shitty hell? Is this for real?
>>83724143
>Some people are born with artistic talent and some are not.
This is the worst thing I've seen someone say on /co/ in a while.
Fuck you, anon.
>>83724143
You're a fucking idiot.
>>83726483
>>83726507
>>83725853
>falling for easy bait
Goddammit you guys
>>83724021
Pretty much this >>83725867. Plus, this book is less "general" than William's and Preston's ones. It's more focused on character animation (like title says) than animation basics, and it's very "Goldberg-esque" (all the drawings are very cartoon and there's no room for realistic or "experimental" animation). It's still very interesting, but I think the other two books are better if you're discovering the medium.
>>83724143
>I have NATURAL TALENT
>Even though I never went to school, have no education and no job
>Everyone else is a faggot
>Quit trying to copy my amazingness you will never understand animation as much as me
>>83726483
>>83726507
>>83728017
But its true. You can either animate or you cannot.
You cannot teach something that requires genuine talent to accomplish.
>>83728826
So then who taught you to shitpost?
Because you certainly aren't talented at it.
>>83724143
Yes anon, every good artist just picked up a pencil one day and realized they were a master, just like how every quantum physicist was born a genius and every body builder was born with fuckhuge muscles.
