It was safe and tame, but a more serialized show like this that manages to stay on track without its story shitting itself is something of a rarity. This is the time we live in.
It's not anything exceptional, but it still manages to stand out a little simply by being a competent kids' mecha. Current offerings are scarce, and alternatives are either bad or non-existent when it comes to western animation. Anime is fun and all, but sometimes it's nice to see that the west still has potential in its talent pool outside of giants like Disney/Pixar.

Maybe, it's been one of the theories floated around. Basically:
1. All the Voltron pilots in the past were Altaen. The Black Paladin went MIA at one point. He actually became Zarkon for whatever TBD reason, then came back to take Voltron back.
2. Voltron pilots have not always been Altaen. Zarkon was just a Galran Paladin who went rogue and tried to steal Voltron for himself and ignited a war to do so.
The second one still kind of has some weird issues where you'd expect people to have brought it up with the current team by now or acted differently, but you could chalk that up to "we kinda don't want to talk about it."

I'm really liking it so far, a LOT more than I ever expected to. On episode 7.
My problem is the same as a lot of people's, though: What exactly is the point of no Robeasts? Even when the show's action is good, it feels repetitive. Voltron feels almost unnecessary, like the Lions are all they really need. The Robeasts used to be extremely frequent and had great designs, and without them something's missing. The ship fights become dull. On top of that, the Galra need more screen time, because at this point they're not very interesting.
The rest, however, is great. Good characters, good action, and the humor is surprisingly great.

I think if anyone on the Altaen side knew Zarkon was once a Paladin (including Allura's dad's AI that supposedly housed all his memories), it would've come up as part of their basic info on Zarkon, since they could use every detail they can get.
