People like the Sonic CD artstyle and the classic game trilogies' aesthetics. Sorry it doesn't harken back to an old cartoon that has almost nothing to do with what Sonic was supposed to be.

It's already been confirmed on Ian Flynn's twitter that it takes place in the same continuity as the main comic. So it's only a matter of time before they force the shitty freedom fighter characters into them.

>We recently had the chance to chat with editor Vincent Lovallo about revisiting Sonic's classic roots and whether this one-shot might impact Archie's ongoing Sonic comic. Lovallo also revealed to us that Sonic: Mega Drive will be followed up by a new special later this year called Sonic: Mega Drive - The Next Level. Check out a preview of the two issues below and then scroll down to see what Lovallo had to say.

>IGN: Given the name of this issue and the fact that it takes place after the events of Sonic & Knuckles, are you specifically targeting fans of the 16-bit Sonic games here? Is it intended to be accessible for those who played those games but maybe have never picked up a Sonic comic?

>Vincent Lovallo: Exactly. We definitely have the long-time fans in mind for this issue, however, the way the story is told, just about anyone can pick up the issue and enjoy it as is. Fans of the classic era Sonic games should feel right at home in terms of imagery and structure, while comic fans can jump in and enjoy a new untold chapter in the larger story.

>IGN: What is it about that era of the franchise that you think still resonates with Sonic fans?

>Lovallo: There is a certain cartoony charm about the classic style. Nostalgia is definitely a factor, but it also has this inviting glow that evokes a sense of fun and whimsy.

>IGN: Can you give us an idea of the conflict in this issue and how it builds on the events of Sonic & Knuckles?

>Lovallo: Dr. Eggman has always been a troublemaker and has been known for seeking greater powers to fuel his ambitions. This time, the mad scientist is seeking artifacts called ancient gears to power his latest mech of destruction, the "Megadrive". The quest has Sonic traveling to new lands, with new traps. The bonds he has made with his friends in previous games will come further to light here.
>>
The cover artwork is fantastic. I'd love full-size print(s).
>>
>>83681273

>IGN: Ian Flynn is certainly no stranger to the Sonic comics at this point. How would you say he’s shaking up his approach with this issue?

>Lovallo: Ian knows Sonic. Like, he REALLY knows the franchise in and out. When I told him we were doing this special story he already had a game plan in mind. The result is a mix of traditional comic storytelling with the structure of an actual Sonic game.

>IGN: How much is Tyson trying to capture the look and feel of the classic Sonic games in his art?

>Lovallo: I think Tyson did an excellent job of finding a middle ground of game inspired design and comic styled layout. In terms of the characters, his approach is a mix of the style seen in the opening animation from Sonic CD and his own cartoony flavor.

>IGN: This issue is a standalone one-shot, but does it feed into the events of the ongoing series in any way?

>Lovallo: It will, but I can't say how at this time.

>IGN: Do you think there might be room for an ongoing Sonic: Mega Drive series alongside Archie’s other Sonic projects?

>Lovallo: Absolutely. I think that if there is enough of a demand for it, there is a strong possibility that could come to light.

>IGN: In the original announcement for Sonic: Mega Drive #1, you teased that this issue was just one part of a larger celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. Can you give us any hints as to what else you have planned?

>Lovallo: The 25th anniversary is the be-all end-all time to bring Sonic front and center. It would be foolish to stop the celebration here. I'm happy to announce that we will be continuing the story of MEGA DRIVE with THE NEXT LEVEL, releasing later this year! The story will pick up right where we left off. Sonic will be facing new challenges as well as revived rivals.

>IGN: Assuming Sega announces a new Sonic game to coincide with the anniversary, do you foresee a new comic being released to coincide with that game?
>>
>>83681289

>Lovallo: That would be awesome and we are totally down to do it at Sonic speed!

That's incredibly disappointing but not unsurprising.

I never liked the Freedom Fighters. They are not compelling characters at all and don't bring anything interesting to the table. They always, (even under Flynn) felt like characters that are there simply because the story needs a supporting cast. What's worse, is that more times than not the "supporting cast" becomes the main cast and you're left wondering where the titular character is. This is one of the leftovers from Penders that I wish they didn't keep. The FF always seemed to bog everything down, and no amount of marginally better writing is going to fix a fundamentally flawed concept.

I don't give a single solitary fuck about Sally Acorn and her kingdom of literally who furries. I just wanted Sonic and the gang to kick the shit out of Eggman and have fun stories based on the games. I suspect a lot of people feel the same to some degree. I don't care for Flynn as a writer, but I know he's not stupid. There must have been some more editorial meddling that forced him to include the FF in some way, because surely he saw them as dead weight from the get-go.

Or perhaps I'm giving him too much credit.

>>83684155
I think a lot of people are getting sick of them. I hope if the Classic themed book is popular enough they'll eventually reboot the main series to something similar.
>>
>>83681238
Look at Robotnik. There's no way he's in the same continuity
>>
>>83686491
Look at Sonic Generations. It's a younger Eggman. Not much else to look into.
>>
>>83686391
Ian likes them, I'm sure and probably wouldn't drop them since developing the game characters much and in certain ways is hard due to SEGA.

That said, I see no point in including them in Mega Drive if it indeed becomes a third Sonic book. It'd provide a nice game-centric alternative. The main comic continuity already has two books that mostly work fine and the only other one Archie had going on not connected to it got canned for no good reason.
>>
>>83686696
Have you read the comics?
Eggman didn't exist until later in the series.
Robotnik looks completely different from younger Eggman

I was and still am a big fan of Sega and their home consoles. To be honest, I've never gotten the appeal of Sonic either after forcing myself to try and like them for so long. I remember someone saying that the love for the series comes from the fusion of "speed-platforming-speed", where "speed" is used as kind of a Pavlovian reward for the platforming segments. I never felt that those two meshed all that well though
>>
>>83687955

I can agree with the person who said that, I love Sonic games because actual platforming isn't that important...if you're really good it's fucking minimal, and that's kind of where the fun is of replaying the games....being able to do each stage with minimal platforming, there's nothing quite as satisfying as those moments of blazing through a portion of a stage while avoiding traps and smashing through enemies without pause

What? How does that even make sense? Fuck's sake, I love the Archie comics but they are so married to continuity and it always hurts them.
>>
>>83686391
>There must have been some more editorial meddling that forced him to include the FF in some way, because surely he saw them as dead weight from the get-go.
If Ian Flynn has any one worst problem, it's that he loves the Sonic media even when it's completely not worth it. He likes the FF, just as he liked the Penders comics. I like the guy, I like his writing, but he holds onto things that he doesn't need to with a sense of respect that's not always deserved.
>>
>>83688745
Speed can be a reward for a skilled player, but it's mostly given to the player in predetermined sections to break up the platforming. The two rarely mix.

In Mario games, platforming mostly consists of jumping from and onto flat surfaces. It's very simple and intuitive in concept. In Sonic games, where Sonic's inertia is a huge part of the physics engine, learning how to navigate slopes and loops, and understanding how they change Sonic's forward momentum, is downright essential. In a lot of ways, Mario was Platforming 101 and Sonic was Platforming 201. Sonic games aren't necessarily harder, but they do throw more ideas at the player and require a more thorough understanding of how the game physics work to play it properly.
>>
>>83695771
Honestly, the comics have done a very good job of portraying the game characters in an interesting light for the past couple years and hasn't done so for the Freedom Fighters. Since the reboot, only Sally, Rotor and Nicole have really had any good stories. Meanwhile, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy have been on fire.

Actually reverse is true. Ian and the others begged Archie and Sega to let them keep the FF after the whole penders mess.

The FF themselves are a necessary evil because none of the game characters can ever really develop or change their personalities/attitudes. Now should they disappear for a year or two while Sonic does his own thing? Sure why not. Even Penders did this in his run.
>>
>>83686391
>I don't give a single solitary fuck about Sally Acorn

This. Fuck this awful spotlight stealing Sue. Sure the Freedom Fighters in general have overstayed their welcome, but she's the core of them all. I will never understand why, outside of pitiful furry masturbators/wankers, this piece of shit was ever created and maintained for so long. She's such a bitch.

If Sega has essentially retired Shadow the Hedgehog, then Archie should retire Sally Acorn.
>>
>>83699886
In nu252 games have all taken place and were the backstory for Sonic's youth. We've already had flash backs to Sonic 3, Heroes, and Sonic 2 GG.

The only things we know that hasn't happened is stuff like school house, olympic games, racers, etc.

Check out the mandates, they aren't allowed to really change at all. This is a double edge sword as it prevents out of character stupid shit like knuckles going woe is me, but it also means Amy will always be the love stricken sonic fan girl or Sonic will be the up beat chirpper flow with the wind guy.

But another question, is it just the FF you want gone? Or also the world and anything non-game?

Fuck it, I don't even consider them an "evil". The best part of the comic was when the game characters and the comic characters interacted fluidly. I understand people wanting a Sonic comic to juts be Sonic and the game characters, but Archie Sonic being Archie Sonic, a different but familiar take on the franchise, is what I like about them and it's been that way since the beginning.
>>

>Knuckles isn't allowed to return to being Sonic's rival
Fuck Shadow.
>>
>>83718863
>The FF themselves are a necessary evil because none of the game characters can ever really develop or change their personalities/attitudes.
To be fair, the Freedom Fighters at this point have solidified and can't develop much more than the Sega characters can. Both are fairly solidly in a certain role, and while their status quo can temporarily shift, everybody knows that they're going to return to their normal selves when the day is over. People talk about how the FF are way more important because they're allowed to change, but as a kid's action/adventure comic the cast on a whole is fairly static and that works for the stories it tries to tell. You don't NEED to have the amount of massive twists and shifts that say, Knuckles did, in the old comics to make him likable and interesting to read.
>>
>>83720143
>Knuckles isn't allowed to return to being Sonic's rival
The comics play Knuckles up as Sonic's rival way harder than Shadow, I don't know what you're talking about. If anything they play Shadow and Sonic's relationship up as Sonic and his awkward nerdy friend.
