Welcome back Anons! Let's read some more Deadly Hands of Kung Fu!
>Is return of the Dragon really a sequel to Enter the Dragon? Is Return of the Dragon really Bruce Lee's last movie?
He's dead by now, so I think so.
>Tigers in a mind-cage
I immediately thought of Suffering-Man.
So has anybody here read Master of Kung Fu? Are these Shang-Chi stories all new, or just reprints?
You know what sucks? Having to look down to a laptop while your neck hurts from sleeping on it wrong.
So when did Shang-Chi lose this hair and go to the Bruce Lee cut?
>>83651236
Tigers in a Mind-Cage might make for a good psychadelic/prog rock album title.
The best hitman is this one guy with a gun?
What, couldn't afford Bullseye?
Oh hey, eyepatch is back!
I just realized I don't remember her name.
>>83651268
It's been a while since I read him, but I don't remember ever seeing Yin Yang panels in his color comic.
>>83651593
Really? Seems like the kind of random asian symbol they'd throw in without a thought.
Love you, OP.
>>83651632
But that's forbidden love, Anon!
That's a unique way of censoring curse words.
>>83651394
Not sure. I have his solo comic and he has the long hair even in the last issue in 1983.
So yeah, Eyepatch definitely lied.
>>83651625
It's not that they didn't throw in random Asian stuff, it's just that they weren't that experimental with panel layouts.
>>83651803
Weird, Starlin got pretty trippy during Warlock.
And let's skip the review of a 40 year old movie and the "Kung Fu lessons".
>>83651268
I'm fairly certain that the Shang-Chi stories that appeared in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu were originals made expressly for the magazine, not reprints of the stuff that appeared in Master of Kung Fu.
Deadly Hands of Kung Fu was specifically for Marvel chop-socky stories that may not be able to get approval from the Comics Code Authority for whatever reason (drug use, violence, etc.).
... The fuck kind of weapon is that?!
>>83651881
I'm just surprised Shang-Chi got that many stories, considering he's barely appeared in anything else.
>>83651840
True, but that was cosmic stuff. It's entirely possible that he just felt that a martial arts comic should have a clear flow of action, with minimal trippy shot.
The Sons of the Tiger, on the other hand, really only appeared in this mag.
>>83651840
He doesn't have wifi, does he?
Well, I say that, but we'll see how their story goes...
>>83651911
Or maybe they didn't let him drop as much acid.
Seriously, did you SEE that clown issue?
So is Felicia around at this point?
>>83651898
His solo lasted over a hundred issues, man.
>"You have used martial arts to hurt others!"
>"So I'm going to punish you by using violence on you!"
>>83652013
>>83651997
Nope, 1979.
>>83651898
Yeah, Moench was really passionate about Shang-Chi. Master of Kung Fu was one of those titles where you're just kind of surprised when you realize that Marvel published it for as long as it did (the holder of that crown has to be Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos... Marvel published that series for 18 years from 1963 to 1981, although the last few years were basically just a series of reprints).
>>83651966
still the most brutal attack i've seen on big 2.
and still totally relevant.
>>83651974
this is stupid
>>83652117
I used to watch anime, so this makes perfect sense to me.
>>83651966
>that face last panel
So Bob Diamond's giant clone wants to rape him, right?
And suddenly, Killbots.
Huh, I don't think I've ever heard of Swords of Death.
I know this woman. I have actually seen her in my neighborhood, and she is exactly as unpleasant to be around as you'd guess.
Granted, she didn't exactly deserve a brutal knife to the chest. Just a telling off.
>>83652261
Either they're talking about those Miyamoto Musashi movies, or they're talking about Shogun Assassin 2: Lightning Swords of Death, which was actually Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades but that didn't have enough marketable buzzwords for American movie execs.
>>83652551
>Either they're talking about those Miyamoto Musashi movies,
I have those on Blu-Ray (or maybe DVD, I forget). I seriously need to watch them. There's a lot of classic Kung Fu movies I should look for. I'd ask /tv/ for recs, but all they seem to talk about in the three times I've been there is cuckolding and teenage girl's feet.
Actually, give me a bit, I'll check my shelf.
Yep, got the Samurai Trilogy with Toshiro Mifune on Blu-Ray.
>>83652593
I think it was number 6 that was titled Swords of Death.
Fucking hell, he just dropped a 100 crack fist on his ass, that's great.
>>83652717
Yeah, different series then, this doesn't even have that many movies.
>>83652261
Ooooh! One more issue before Rudy Nebres takes over the art chores, if I remember correctly. Both Neal Adams and John Buscema spoke very highly of his skills as an artist (especially as an inker). Adams called him the best ink artist he'd ever worked with and Buscema (who was sort of like Alex Toth in that he could be very critical of his peers) insisted that if he wasn't going to ink his own pencils on Savage Sword of Conan, that Marvel should always go with Nebres.
I think Nebres was still in the process of developing his style when he worked on Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, though. He wouldn't really hit his peak until he started working for Warren Publishing.
>>83652808
Well luckily Anon, we're getting to issue 9 tonight!
>>83652148
I know the trope, its just dramatically stupid for him to overcome it so easily
>>83652871
In these days of Bendis-like decompression, I don't mind things getting solved quickly.
This scene just makes me think of that bit in Superior Spider-Man where SpOck kills that guy in cold blood. Due to the nature of cape comics, we know he'd never be able to get the help he needs, but in-universe, it has to feel like a punch in the gut.
Completly unrelated to any of this, while trying to find that "Swords of Death" movie, I found out about the "Lone Wolf and Cub" manga, which I'm going to have to start reading after I finish the rest of my backlog.
>>83651394
Probably some time late in the eighties. Think he had it in the Ultimate Universe, though that might've been Iron Fist.
And suddenly a random Daredevil cameo, years before he got involved in these kinds of shenanigans himself, I believe.
>>83653120
Could've been both?
This wouldn't have been a problem if you tried to get Daredevil with you.
>>83652908
>>83652992
>cops shooting an unarmed man for 'looking aggressive'
Still topical!
>>83653229
And then they try to shoot the minority!
Remember Anons, it isn't murder if it's a ninja.
>>83652840
Neat. I'll stay up for that.
Where the hell was that guy hiding, up the sumo guy's ass?!
Oh, it's a she. Maybe it was some kind of sex thing?
>>83653313
WAIT NO MORE!
Was he going by an alias? I don't see his name here.
>>83653202
>that Matt Murdock appearance wasn't just a gratuitous cameo, it was foreshadowing
Genius.
>>83653555
That's one of the few legit superhero cameos we get in this, if you count count Iron Fist and White Tiger.
AND SPEAKING OF IRON FIST!
>>83653065
>I found out about the "Lone Wolf and Cub" manga, which I'm going to have to start reading after I finish the rest of my backlog.
Great choice. I personally think that Lone Wolf and Cub is an especially important read for any young comics artist (or even aspiring storyboard artist) looking to learn pacing in visual storytelling. It's decompressed, but in a way that serves the story—think of the directorial style of Sergio Leone or Werner Herzog.
Word of warning, though: All the official Lone Wolf and Cub English translations from Dark Horse Manga feature "flipped pages" so that they can be read conventionally from left-to-right (the original manga was oriented right-to-left). This isn't really a problem unless you're a purist for adaptations, but in a manga that features a lot of swordplay, it is occasionally annoying... like the script will refer to someone as being a left-handed swordfighter, but the art (being flipped) will show the character as holding his sword in his right hand.
All the other Kojima-Koike collaborations (Samurai Executioner, Lady Snowblood) are available "unflipped" in English from Dark Horse, though, as well as the sequel New Lone Wolf and Cub.
I imagine there's something in the original license agreement that prevents Dark Horse from issuing newer, unflipped editions of the original Lone Wolf and Cub series, seeing as how Dark Horse has already released "unflipped" editions of stuff they've previously released like Masamune Shirow's Appleseed and Orion.
>>83652593
Shang Chi just can't stop falling for this trick.
Poor guy.
>>83653364
>Was he going by an alias? I don't see his name here
Dammit. I guess I remembered wrong. I looked up his bibliography on ComicBookDB and it says he started with issue #12.
Oh well, I'm enjoying the storytime regardless.
>>83653624
I also found out that it apparently inspired Frank Miller so much that he's doing the cover art for the Omnibus releases (I should ask if they're any good in the shelf threads). It's amusing to remember he was a big ninja and samurai guy once, given how he is now.
>>83653474
>>83653472
is this real kung fu?
>>83653670
Eh, that'd be tomorrow night then. I try to do three a night.
>>83653649
If it ain't broke, you know?
Nevermind about that superhero cameo, it took me a bit to realize "Oh shit, that was Aunt May in the last panel"
>>83653332
I believe the term is anal vore.
>>83653796
I was trying to make a Superior Foes reference, not actually try to guess what kind of weird fetish it was.
>>83653065
Lone Wolf and Cub is the shit. It's one of the craziest samurai manga in the business.
>>83653824
My only experience with samurai manga is Ruroni Kenshin, so it probably isn't a high bar to match.
>>83653456
He's got some impressive sideburns for a little kid.
And I'm sure you can guess the twist, assuming you aren't stupid like these two.
... Okay, I was expecting she was just a honey trap, I didn't expect the mind control angle.
>>83653673
>I also found out that it apparently inspired Frank Miller so much that he's doing the cover art for the Omnibus releases (I should ask if they're any good in the shelf threads).
Miller also did the covers for the original "floppy" English editions that First Comics published back in the 1980s. He was one of the first mainstream US comics pros to talk up manga in the comics press, and from what I recall, he had some role in First Comics landing the English-language reprint rights.
As for the omnibus editions, there are pros and cons. On the plus side, the page dimensions are significantly larger than in the original TPBs (some of the detail can be hard to see in the original TPBs). On the negative side (and this may just be personal preference for me), the omnibus volumes can be unwieldy to read (they're 700 pages or so per volume) and from my own experience, once you get that thick with a paperback, the binding doesn't hold up as well to repeated reading. But hey, I guess you can just read the online scans/digital rips and keep the omnibus volumes in reasonably pristine condition.
And that's it for the night, Anons. See you tomorrow night for more of the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu@
>>83653939
Thanks for the storytime OP
>>83653784
why does he have no face?
>>83653673
Frank Miller liked it so much he got the untranslated Japanese copies (this was back before there was any kind of market for manga).
>>83653631
>Black man saving a chinese woman
>D.W. Griffith
Bill. Come on. Knock that shit off.
Where can I download these issues?
>>83656363
Any of the usual torrent sites would have it, although it's only proper that I point oit to everyone enjoying the series that Marvel is releasing an Omnibus of the first half of the series in November.
And before anyone makes the jokes, Disney isn't paying me to shill their comics. If they were, Id be posting these storytimes at a normal freaking hour
