WIP. Trying out Clip Studio's new animation update. Tried to do this several times before I got something passable. Tried putting in arcs, which I think made some difference. Aside from roughing the arms in, adding linework and coloring it, is there anything that needs fixing at this early stage?

Yo screw you it's quicker to convince me to draw than to write, but that's because I'm stuck in a safe zone of drawing animals all the time. Also, I've never requested any art because it drives me to work harder.

I'm better at people than I was before but it still makes me mad whenever I try.

start reading books more, think of your favorite stories. what do you like about them? creativity can be cultivated, and you're already creative while drawing.

start small. think of a character, who they are, why they look the way they do. will you make a friend for them, perhaps? maybe they have a pet. you can expand from that, where do they live? what are their interests?

I can vouch for this. I'll stay awake until I actively have to fight the urge to lay down and pass out and suddenly my brain starts making all these weird and novel connections between ideas I've been working on. I rush to sketch them out and include enough notes to know what the hell I was aiming for when I'm well rested -- end up with a lot of good material for further refinement. I think a lot of it is just losing the need for protecting my fragile ego with self-censorship.

Looks good mate, keep drawing.

I think the best way to get drawing is to identify what stops you from drawing (specifically things within your control). For me it's vidya and youtube, when you know what causes you to get distracted you can form ways to overcoming it. Either by scheduling your hours, or by simply saying 'no' to yourself before you embark in a session of purging filthy xenos. I always find that the hardest part is starting, but when you do get that start you just fall into drawing, and even if it gets frustrating you can still learn from it and you feel like you've been productive.

>writing is easy
When you're making garbage like Homestuck I'm sure it is.
So he gets his feelings hurt most people hate Flash for animating and decides to make blank statements in his ire.
He's a tool and anyone who says writing is easy should put their pencils and other art utensils down because they're disrespecting their own. Writing is an art form just like drawing. It's a slap in the face when you have put hours of work and years of honing a craft and have someone brush it off as "easy".
Every professional artist has a story where a client or someone they're working under devalues their ability. They want work for free, they want you to do a piece over again not thinking of the time and resources needed to do it, they refuse to pay, refuse to give you credit because in their minds drawing is "easy". Your effort and time isn't worth their money or their respect. And the same thing happens to writers. This asshole has no idea what collaboration is. Which is why he's struggle to put out a shitty web series, and had to abandon it multiple times.
He's the type of shit head the art and creative community does not need in it's ranks.
Fuck him.

To be fair, there's absolutely no reason someone who commissions art should have to promote the person who made it. Editing out the signature is shitty, but paying for something and parting ways never to speak again is completely fair. If you expect more than word of mouth from your customers, you're expecting way too much.

Artists don't care about you telling your friends about them, they care about people posting their commissions on imageboards and the poster not being able to remember the names of the artists preventing other people from seeing the rest of the artists stuff because they're being a spiteful retard for no reason.

No, you don't have to be BFFs with someone you commission a piece from, but if others ask about it, why not just say "oh, X drew that for me"? That's really not even praise, just a fact.

>To be fair, there's absolutely no reason someone who commissions art should have to promote the person who made it.
Its not fair when that artist:
A) makes a living or even side money from commissions and
B) That artist spend time and effort in making that art and has just as much if not more ownership over that piece than the client.

You'd never see someone scratch the HP or Apple logos off a computer. You won't see someone take the Ford or Toyota logos off their cars because they feel like they shouldn't be promoting them after paying.
An artist's signature is their brand. And it is shitty to remove it but even shittier to feel like you have no obligation to give them more customers after you've gotten a service from them. It takes a true selfish cunt who disrespects art and artists to do that. This is why artist deface their own work online with giant watermarks because people feel like they can just take. You have scumbags who take art slap it on some cheap products and the artist is unable to do a thing because so many people devalue their work. Yet if someone makes a bootleg iPad they can be railed up the ass if Apple very much pleases.
"It's not to be fair" because that artist is trying to live on his craft and the customer is not. It's not "expecting way too much" because that's how the business of art works. And even if you paid for one piece of art by removing a signature you are very much robbing the artist of future commissions and opportunities. Period.

I would never remove a signature but I would have no problem removing watermarks and the like. Any artist who does that is a piece of shit. Actually I would be more likely to refuse to share their artwork entirely and badmouth them if they hear them mentioned.
>>
>>83687887

He's right that if someone is a working artist they have every right to put a signature/logo on their art and no one should remove them or steal their art.

When you're a popular artist who constantly has people stealing your work or laying claim to it you have no choice but to take those measures. But you feeling like you're entitled to their art without a watermark makes you a piece of shit not the artists.

It seems like you're trying to draw the hand without realizing how it's truly structured. Look at an anatomy book or a good drawing tutorial (I'd recommend "Fun With A Pencil") and see what goes into not only the hand, but the rest of the body as well. Once you learn how to build things from the inside out, it gets much easier.

I've been reading on Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and I'm trying to avoid being one of those people who foregoes structure practice. I did try to keep that drawing referenced, but I don't know how to keep things anatomically structured outside of drawing what I see instead of whatever symbols I already have in my mind. That's been a recurring theme in my practice lately.

I've heard a lot about Fun with a Pencil, would it really be one of the best options at this stage?
>>
>>83703358
>would it really be one of the best options at this stage?

For hands in particular, not really, since it only glazes over that. But it does present the idea of drawing the underlying structure in a simple manner. Here's a link to a few books.

You scrubs need to look at this holistically, not as drawing or writing, but as overall storytelling ability.

Drawing is only perceived as harder because it isn't a subjective necessity like writing is. Society views being able to convey ideas through words as one of the defining gauges of intelligence (or education), while being able to draw well is seen as a "fun-yet-nonessential" talent similar to juggling or being a baseball player.

Can I post voice stuff here? Since it's art? Thinking of getting into voice acting after disability make me unable to continue stage acting. Got told I sound like Arleen Sorkin.

I'm looking to get into VA because I was a stage actor but my disability makes it too hard to stage act. I've been getting into old radio plays and stuff and learning about the legends of radio, and I really feel at home. I really hope I get to meet cool people.

Since you guys dig impressions (I guess. I don't want to do impressions, I want to voice act), here's Harley (Sorkin Harley) as Dr Quinzel since I have a similar voice:

I think it's hard to say, especially depending on what kind of comic you're trying to create. Some comics focus much more on visuals than writing, letting their pictures do the talking for them. In those cases I think the creator would say that art is harder than writing. I've also seen comic books that are basically page after page of word blocks over a few images, and I think that the author of that would say the opposite. It's just incredibly ignorant to think that all comics might be exactly like yours.

'writing is easy' - yeah, because he is simply making one-panel shitty pages and writes uberlong dialogue scenes.
Writing actual comics, having to consider panels, instead of an illustrated chatlog, is tricky.

Consider pic related. If you know something about fiction, you are probably aware of a concept of 'interest curve' in one form or another - "A good film should start with an earthquake and be followed by rising tension" - basically, that tension in a work of fiction should follow a curve more or less like this:
http://scalar.usc.edu/works/interactive-storytelling-narrative-techniques-and-methods-in-video-games/media/3.4%20-%20Pacing%20example%20(Scene)%20-%20Mass%20Effect%203.gif
- something interesting at the beginning to interest the reader, then drop in tension as a breather, than tension should gradually rise until the climax near the end.

That is relatively common knowledge.

Less common is idea that we can apply it even to a single comic page - well written page will start by grabbing your attention, taking a breather, then building tension until final cool moment of climax (which might also happen on the next page, as a splash page reveal).

That is less common knowledge, but you might realize it if you read/wrote some comics.

So here is the thing. Take a page from Watchmen. I analyzed it to try to learn some tricks from Alan Moore, and was floored, right on the first page.

See, Alan Moore does apply the 'rising tension' to the entire page, sure.

But here's the trick, the catch - the reason why Moore wanted a rigid nine-panel grid giving him complete control over panel layout - and why Watchmen is such an enthralling read, as proven by huge sales and all the awards.

Alan Moore applies the concept of rising tension to every single row of panels.

It's brilliant, really. We read horizontally, and if you distinguish act of reading a page and turning it as something deserving it's own buildup-climax cycle, then a 'line break' of looking for next row of panels should too.

Consider first row - we start with a smiley face in a pool of blood. Wait, what? What the hell is going on? And a narration? What exactly is going on here?
Still, we know someone is most likely dead, and there is character named Rohrschach. Intriguing, for sure.
Panel two - nothing really interesting, not as much as in panel one. Rorshach rants about ironically fitting metaphor, while we get a promise of a shoe - promise of a human character is most interesting thing in this panel.

Then, third one: payoff! We see two different characters, as Rorshach delivers his easily most remembered line. Ever wondered why this line seemed so memorable, even though more rant follows? That is why, because it serves as a climax of panel rows.

Then, line break.

We start second row with a clean palate. At this point, reader started to twig that camera is going up, and it doesn't seem to stop - interesting. While Rohrschach firmly establishes his political beliefs as quite right-wing. So, panel is interesting, but for different reasons than ones in first row.

Second panel in second row, Rohrschach follows up on his previous though. Most interesting thing is view of the street, with sci fi truck.

Then, third panel of second row - boom! Payoff! Rohrshach delivers his second witty punchline, as we finally learn where we are headed - a hand at edge of broken window. That implies where blood came from, for astute readers.

Then, final panel. Note that it is built so that reader reading from the left, will slowly draw their eyes across full cityscape, providing conclusion to the page - while dialogue confirms that blood below belongs to someone who fell from this window.

So, reader also realized they just traced path of someone who fell to their deaths - backwards.

All that, in one page. We learned a lot about the world (sci-fi, but gritty and with apocalyptic nutjobs), we get a good character study of a character, and we establish a murder mystery.

All in one page.

So yeah, no fucking way Andrew Hussie would be able to pull off something like this, because he's a hack.

How is this relevant to an art thread? Well, when drawing comics, you can keep this in mind - it seems to me that e.g. Kenneth Rocafort seems to be aware of the concept, and partial reason for his weird panel layouts is attempting to put panels together in those buildup-climax cycles.

So, it's something to keep in mind when writing or doing layouts.

Yo, Zarya is an already stylized version. It might be a better idea to use real photos of female atheletes.

Also, muscled women don't look like men. Consider slightly wider hips and more narrow shoulders - unless you want her to look androgynous, which is cool too.

Also what I do, is go to creepshot threads, and save pics as art reference. It gives you good range of everyday bodytypes in variety of poses. Books are good for starting advice. (inb4 mah Loomis, Loomis stuff is super fucking old.)

when i see things like this i end up hating everyone.

the consumer is an entitled fuck and then artists and their sycophants get involved with "but i NEED my signature and credit there, i'm entitled to make money from my work!" which is a position i can't respect either.

i just want everyone to die.
then again i'm not a big fan of commissions in general because the furry fandom underlines how money can poison a community.

>artists aren't entitled to make money from their work
Would you do work - any kind of work! - for no pay or compensation?

Would you also be happy to produce some work and NOT receive any kind of credit for it?

Would you ask a plumber to fix your sink for free and not even pass on his number to your friend whose drains are blocked?

>artists aren't entitled to make money from their work
i'd pay you for that strawman any day of the week. it's definitely a top of the line one.

you're entitled to TRY and make money from your work. if you set up a plumbing business and it doesn't earn enough to cover additional costs like operating a van, that's your problem.

to answer the first question, it comes down to one of definitions: how are we defining "work"?

would i make art for free for someone else, to their specifications, for free? 99% of the time no. i would define that as work.
would i make art for free for others to view, to my specifications? i already do occasionally, but i don't define it as work even though i could be doing more enjoyable things than drawing because i enjoy nice comments or the social reaction to someone unexpectedly a specially made drawn insult on a forum.

but that's beyond the point, because the comparison was never "artists should work for free", it was "artists [or worse, non-artist sycohpants.] complaining they're entitled to be paid" which is different. the issue is with the complaining, not with the general payments.

with exception to the furry fandom, but that's a problem with D-I-Y vs buy-it-in, not with payment in and of itself.

Do you just find yourself buying endless sketchbooks and pens whenever the chance arises?

I kind of like how the mic makes you sound like one of those old timey commercial ladies.

Or from the black and white film era. It sounds cool even without the effects though.

>writing is easy
>drawing is hard
Then how come Homestuck's writing is even worse than it's "art"?
