Simplification of expression allows for viewers can to input their own emotional point of view on a situation. In reality people often only have a dozen or so expressions they use and because of this it might seem like some people are lacking in expressive behavior. Really think about yourself /co/... How often do you get to emote through facial expressions? Which expressions do you see in real life and of those which do you see as comical?
As reference I just wrapped up interviewing a few dozen plant workers from a company in the Appalachians. Every single one of them were super nice but they each only had a few facial expressions to react from. The only reason I say this is because it's important to understand that while it does simplify the craft of animating it also allows a lot of cognitive learning for young viewers who are learning sarcasm, irony, "real-world" humor, etc.
