Writers just dont know how to work with super genius scientists. If they aren't constantly ruining the world with their inventions, they solve too many problems because they can just build incredible things casually. So you get the situation where its like "Well why doesn't this super genius construct a machine to control the weather, so that drought struck lands can be given relief, or machines to stop horrible earthquakes and tsunamis, or why doesn't he advance medical technology so that even more lives can be saved, or use their incredibly technology and finances to aid third world countries or deal with very serious issues in the world?" and you get the response "Because hes too busy building a hole into another dimension that will spill monsters out, or building super combat robots to help fight aliens that will inevitably turn on people and threaten the world. Or he's putting fancy new guns on his robot suit"
