Why is this show so popular with the same fanbases who love Gravity Falls and Steven Universe? Whenever I find artists on Tumblr, they end up liking the same trio of cartoons and I'm not sure what R&M has in common with the other two to warrant that.

I don't know. All I know is that i love Rick and Morty and also enjoy Gravity, though not as much as Steven Universe.
Maybe it's just that they are good shows, so it end up being enjoyed by a lot of people and those inevitably intersect.
Science fiction mixed with some humanity and emotions. Comedy never hurts.
Can't say I like GF or SU myself, but R&M fills the hole in my heart that Futurama left.

Yeah, that's a polite way of saying, "low ratings". If they were getting better ratings, they would want to milk it more. But since they lost their flagship show (Gravity Falls), they're trying to invest in another way. They went with Star Vs. because it was getting better ratings than Wander and renewed it all the way until season three despite season two not even airing yet.
They also made the decision to end Wander before season two of Wander premiered. In Disney's mind, if the show isn't going to be a hit season one, they may as well invest into a new show that MIGHT be a hit than a show that will continue to do mediocre.
