It does kind of take away from what you could do in DMC3, but it's at least a way to sort of nerf Vergil in DMC4:SE. Cuz holy shit is he ever OP in that game. Yeah the general tone and the color palette is a lot different. '99 is more dark and moody, while 2011 is more lighthearted and upbeat with bright colors. Still very violent though. 2011 also goes much further in the story.
