There's nothing wrong with having a dark story. Sure, I love the version we got (and the way racism/prejudice was handled in the version we got was better -- though the original version may have worked too), but who is to say the old version would have sucked if most of it was kept?
My issue is that Pixar and Disney seem to be absolutely terrified of trying anything different or taking any risks despite the fact that they are basically the film industry and they have so much money they very well could take risks.

Disney will be reigning Byron and Rich in even more now that Zootopia is their cash cow.
I mean, look at Rogue One. They seemed like they were fine with Edwards making that film dark but now after the success of TFA (a highly overrated film that was mediocre at best) they want Rogue One to match it in tone and are having 40% of the film re-shot to make it lighter....
Zootopia did have executive meddling to brighten the mood, but I still believe that the reason it turned out as good as it did AND it felt like a very "un-Disney" Disney film is because it was seen as a B-project so Byron and Rich and the other artists were given more freedom to be creative.
