Starting with a question from the last thread: what kind of ink / ink-pens do you use?
What are the best brands?

If you do it all digitally, do you have a drawing tablet?
What are the best brands?
>>
>>83535358
I do everything digitally, use an old wacom intous tablet.

Hiveworks deadline is coming up, anybody here submitting to it? What are you planning on sending in?
>>
>>83535405
I bought a middle-prized wacom tablet recently. It was sold as new but the code for the program package was expired. Now it's just a useless chunk of plastic.

Any idea where I can steal the program package?

No clue. If it's an old one you probably won't find it anywhere.
>>
>>83535358
I can't comment on other brands, but the wacom intuos I've had for the past six years works just fine despite going through a lot of rough handling and transport in that time. I did have the nibs on the stylus run down and had to buy replacements, but if I hadn't lost the extras that came with the tablet that wouldn't have been a problem.

What? Do you mean the drivers? Those should be free on the wacom site.

I'd love to do it for the sake of free website design, but I want to be able to rake in those sweet waifu patreon bucks at some point, so it's probably not a good idea.

The Pentel Pocket Brush Pen is the main brushpen I use. It's a go-to for a lot of pros. Excellent weights and variation in line, and refillable. You can't go wrong with it.

As for fineliners the Faber Castell PITT pens are the usual industry standard

It's pathetically easy, and is likely just there to confirm you actually did your pages instead of stealing them.

Oh, also, they're not comparable.
A 250 word script isn't going to give NEARLY as much information and nuance as three pages of thumbnails.

250 words is like two paragraphs. It's barely enough to plot out two pages unless you Marvel Method it. Heck, this post is 25 words.

Everybody knows Alan Moore writes whole chapters for every panel, but it doesn't mean it's a good practice, writing comics is not "the more words you have the better".

When you write a script, the important thing is to pass to the writer your intentions, and you could waste his time writing a whole gigantic paragraph where you describe the unfolding of events like you were writing a book to the reader himself, on how in this panel this character is creeping on the scene, and he feels a shiver run through his spine when he sees this thing on the background that is beyond his wildest imaginations and he has these conflicted emotions, and he is kinda angry, but kinda skeptic, all before realising he is sad at the point of breaking up crying only to THEN reveal he is looking at "this character" dead body, or you could simply write "dude, our hero is walking into this scene and finding out this character's dead body. he has this expression on his face, he is feeling this way.
dead body in the foreground, our hero in the background" and the effect to the reader would be the same.

Your artist doesn't need surprises, he needs to know from panel 1 where this page is going. Most of this description will be lost in translation and will only serve to distract the artist from the most important shit to be portrayed on the panel. The artist will sketch the page, and every time he wants to remember what he was supposed to illustrate there he will be welcomed by an exausting wall of text.

How much direction are we talking, though? I'd like to see how much direction other writers in /hyw/ give their artists so I can see how differing levels of detail work for others.

Pic related is an example of the average amount of direction I give in my scripts (issue 2 page 4 if you want to compare). I'd say this is a pretty good representation of how much direction I give on average. Sometimes I'll have ultra-specific directions and sometimes we'll just go full-on Marvel Method (issue 1 page 13 is an example of this) but usually it's pretty much just like this.
>>
>>83540052
>writing comics is not "the more words you have the better".
Nobody said this.

>the important thing is to pass to the writer your intentions
I don't think anyone would argue against this.

>"dude, our hero is walking into this scene and finding out this character's dead body. he has this expression on his face, he is feeling this way.
dead body in the foreground, our hero in the background"
Well hey there, composition and body language! I think I mentioned those over here
>>83539002
and used Moore's writing as an example of using these things.

Also, 37 words for a splash page..unless you're trying to say that's all a writer should give you for a multi-panel page. Because if that's what you mean, your writer is fucking worthless because they aren't even writing the story beats.

>Your artist doesn't need surprises, he needs to know from panel 1 where this page is going.
Again, nobody would argue this.

>an exausting wall of text
And here's the problem: nobody ever implied that a script should be like that. The entire point was that 250 words for three pages is laughable if you want an idea of how someone works. If they meet it, it'll be so sparse that it reflects poorly on them. Now, they shouldn't write a fucking 700 word document on three pages, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying 250 is comically low, like asking for a two image thumbnail. There's not enough substance there to discern anything. Even 300 wouldn't be that bad, but 250? Fucking please.

>>83541261
>I'm just saying 250 is comically low, like asking for a two image thumbnail.

Maybe the 250 words script is more based on single creators who do writing and art but work with scripts instead of thumbnails?
Because in that case you already know what your intentions are, so don't need to spell everything out and the script might end up shorter. They're probably just setting very low requirements to avoid disqualifiying someone with a decent comic who doesn't really plan out their pages all that much.
>>
>>83542418
It should be noted the 250 word requirement is the minimum. I think they would expect most people to go beyond it.
>>
>>83542120
I like the cleaner version with more line-weight better - both with and without color.

No lineweight can also work, but imo that looks best if it's very minimalistc. Cleaner lines, flat colors, that sort of thing.

the left just has better shapes, that's the thing. the right has more lines, but the actual shapes are inferior (at least th ehair) and the lines under the eyes add nothing.. the poofy fluff actually look sworse on the right due to fewer lines (right? or at least, looser lines)

To be honest though, all you need is something that'll make a mark on your paper. There's some great artists that don't even use inks and just edit their pencil levels in Photoshop to make them as dark as they can. I think it gives it a very nice feel to it.

Nice info on writing and scripting you had, anons. I started Jasper Gold 4 times in total. Twice it started as a sci-fi/westerner
Then once as a full on westerner.
Finally one last time again as a full on westerner, but with a different story plot.

Before I drew the story that you see today, I was conflicted with what kind of story i wanted to do. I must have drawn and inked at least 40+ pages before I was finally satisfied with what I had now.
Best thing you can do is to not get ahead of yourself. Take your time to plan out and outline your story. Jot down the basic plot points and story breaks till you are satisfied with what you got. Then move on to scripting/thumbnailing (depending if you're more a traditional comic maker or the visual story teller type). It will save you a great deal of headache, disappointment, and frustration.

Protip: it's a good idea to have a folder dedicated to comics/stories/images pertaining to the kind of story you're doing. I have an inspirational folder in my laptop and phone for those days when I'm feeling pretty uninspired. Perks me right back up to jump back in.

I'm currently on my way to kill a story I've been doing for almost five years, due to feeling unsatisfied with it, and also to try new stuff, so I know the feeling.
My advice would be to stop when you feel you're not going anywhere, and set sail in a different direction.
But I do acknowledge that commitment and discipline can help you face any hurdle, so ask yourself if you can keep the ship floating.

>>
>>83547461
>Any tips on how to break out of it and just commit?

Make short comics to start with, one to five pages. Use them for practice, and get experimental with them. If they're self-contained, it doesn't matter that Strip A uses a different style and technique to Strip B. Being short, they're easy to finish, and you get used to telling a complete story concisely, instead of meandering and going nowhere for ages.

When you're confident you know what you're doing with short strips, then start building up to longer ones.
>>
>>83547461
>unsatisfied with your art and the inexperience of making a comic

yup it happens to me all the time, the only way to fight it is keep drawing and practicing untlil you feel good with your art, i already had 4 pages ready to begin my comic but after a while i realized that i can draw them way better and make the storytelling way better so now im re drawing them for like the 3rd time, it is frustrating but it also made me realize how much i need to get used to my tablet and how much i need to get better at drawing perspective, also i want to get my art as good i can before i start uploading pages to reduce the cringe i will feel when i go back to the firts pages in a few years

That is wonderful advice! I do have a inspo folder for my comic, and I love screen capping advice like your comment from threads like these. I had to look up your comic and your art is extremely charming. Do you just use traditional inks or do you create pages digitally?

>>83547577
Thank you! That is a different way to look at it, you stop drawing the comic, you kinda kill the characters. That may morbidly fuel the fire to keep going.
>>
>>83535358
Inks: Copic Multiliners. Best because you can erase pencil and the lines won't fade. Even better because you can use Copics over them and the ink won't fade. For paper, Deleter comic paper or smooth Bristol. I used to use Uniball pens, but after getting copics I never went back.
Digitally: Cintiq and Surface Pro 4 for on the go. I love my Cintiq but too many damn wires. Would have gotten a Cintiq Companion but way outta my price range. Clip Studio Paint for creating comics.

This is what I've found works best for me, but I'm a strong believer in it's not the tools you use but your own personal skill.
>>

well then take a step back and just draw them dicking around on your paper. they can wait to be in a comic til you have all the right ideas.
i forget what issue you're having, but i like to, whenever i'm watching a show or something, question what would happen if it went differently. what if they avoided that same cliche that they always do.. could i do a story like that

I got into drawing comics about two years go as a hobby, two years later I'm still working on the same story and I haven't even gotten past the first ten pages. I never really showed my work to anyone so I didn't feel bad abandoning it and starting fresh whenever I felt I learnt something new and wanted to apply it. The story has changed completely from what it first was, but I still carry on a couple stylistic elements. It's been fun.

Pic related, oldest most embarrassing version I got.

I would advise you all to strongly resist the urge to redraw early pages, keep going forward. Dave Sim would never have reached issue 300 of Cerebus the Aardvark if he kept going back to redraw page 1 of issue 1.

When you complete the story and are going to release a collected edition (whether print or digital), then you can think about redrawing pages to unify the art style. But complete the story first, and you won't do that by going backward and starting over again.

(By way of example, Jeff Smith and Osamu Tezuka redrew pages for the collected editions, but only after the strips had originally been published.)

Back when these threads first started they were for helping each other along in the creative process (art & writing alike) and for tip sharing. Networking too if you were into that.

hehe, meta. It's good when you notice you're doing something repeatedly. Mine tends to come from offpanel.
panel 4's dialogue is a mess, but i'm not sure how to fix it. exactly what is he trying to say? like 'i believe we had a deal, we shook on it' ? and you don't 'see someone for their services'
man, mad anna has some wild-ass eyebrows. also cute as fuck pajammers. I feel like the tail should be poking out of, and lifting, the buttflap. though traditionally buttflaps open downward, like a ramp, not upward like a garage door, which is what you've drawn since you put the buttons on the bottom.

This is my third attempt.
My first try at it was in black & white, but I wasn't confident enough at Chiaroscuro so that it looked kinda like a coloring book. It was decent for a first try, and chapters were just 3-5 pages long.
The MAIN concept of a cursed frog knight and a fairy traveling around and meeting a bunch of folklore monsters was there, thoguh the first arc was about elves.
Second try only lasted 7 pages and was more of a remake of a previous chapter. But it was my second attempt at a colored comic and not bad for the results I got.
This one has been going on for 103 pages, and the closest I have to a satisfying comic. Even now, I WISH I had done some things differently had I known how much space I would have had for some events and arcs. Even the current arc changed A LOT from it's first inception. But I think what really pushed me was that I was 24 when I started this version, I didn't think I would have been able to try again in my late 20's.

>>83547660
Well, I DEFINITELLY want to put in the CG in the third story arc.
The Sisters would be nice but it'll be hard to make them fit in. They'd probably be in a Witches' Sabbath, or female Druids, or something...
Saha, Hel, and Fenir from KDN could fit into it once I bring back warewolves, but that'll probably take a LONG while and KDN will be finished by then, so I hope CF has another Fantasy-adventure comic going.

i based her on some random person i met one day who asked to be in my comic. Never saw her again

there's nothing wrong with that, the title of the thread is how's your webcomic.. so.. he should talk about how his comic is. tell us a little about what it's about. that kinda thing. doesn't necessarily need to be contributing or asking for help.

but it should be something more than just a link yeah
>>
>>83573694
it's okay to make it airbrushed but make it more uneven and patchy so it looks like out of focus foliage. up the contrast a bit more too

just a suggestion, try varying your colors you use to shade. for example use a darker blue-green on the grass instead of just dark green. looks nice though anon, keep on truckin

I think we decided it was ADD and bad motor skills. He's gettin better though!
this guy's right though dewd, if you have any energy left over at the end of the lineart stage of a page, it's a good idea to redo some of the lines. 7th panel's hand, 4th panel's nose maybe, those are decent candidates. still, I think at this point you've solidly moved past the 'this is just ugly' phase. looka dem faces. they all have the eyes the right size and shape and everything.

A way to gain exposure, money, help with your website, and connections. It's very exclusive AKA you have to wow them with your pitch or you know a guy on the inside and he hooks you up.

I think your work looks a lot stronger without the clean up lines. They tend to flatten the image and remove the sense of volume that the sketchy layers give on their own. It's such a huge difference that I thought the first page was drawn by a different artist before I hit the girl on the second page. It's an incredible difference - I never noticed how strong your painting was until I saw it unobscured.

Your raw style is really painterly and nearly naturalistic, which is why I think the linework is jarring and brings down the quality of the work so much once applied. Maybe you feel inclined to add it because comics are typically "cartoony", but there are lots of painterly comics out there that look great and don't utilize a linework layer, just paint (Lackadaisy Cats comes to mind, but there certainly are others...) in case you felt that not applying linework would somehow imply laziness on your part - I think it would allow your strengths to come to the forefront.

i'm watching reruns of Doc Mock's Movie Mausoleum
it's actually not the best thing to have on while drawing, i'm not making great progress
>>
>>83587087
i kind of agree with this, plus it fits the background better
and anyway if you're going to do this much work on the coloring, why go back and undo it?
that said, i'm pretty sure i've seen this artist's WIPs before and this is not how he colored back then
>>
Would it be autistic to compile a soundtrack for my comic by linking to songs on Youtube in certain chapters? Because I'm at war with this idea
>>
>>83588053
shit we all used to do that back in the old days
except there weren't no youtube back then so we just added the title and artist of a song in the .txt document at the appropriate places
because we were writing in text, see, because images were costly back then, and the dithering.. my god, the dithering.

RIP half-inside-out t-shirt. you made no sense, were hard to work into werewolf transformations, and i straight up ripped you off from Ink Dolls
hey what do you guys think of post-ending panels like this? I do them once in a rare while, but I feel like they help preserve the timing of the punchline while still working more seinfeldian goodness in
>>
>>83589654
looks like you just wanted to try something for the sake of it. my man perhaps you should go back to voice acting and start a dubbing youtube channel
>>
>>83589863
it's just a WIP dude, ignore the sketches right now, that's just to get the heights in. it's a habit this general has gotten me in so i don't just improvise character placements. actually saves time in the long run. now i understand why TV does the same thing, with stand-ins. just blocking out the shots to make sure they work
i was just asking for the sake of the joke pacing.

we used to discuss that in here on the regular.
my old theme song was World 4 - Chai World from Super Mario Land. not sure if it's different now.

Pretty sure it has cropped up in earlier threads.
The Sisters has, for me, always had a Polaris, Semisonic, classic R.E.M., Stone Temple Pilot vibe going on for much of the core cast, with Amboy Dukes, Redbone, Poppy Family stuff when it comes down to the bad guys. .

Like it helps on some level that the two casts as they are happen to be from different time periods. The occult/cult side of it is supposed to hit on a Satanic Panic, turtlenecks and kool-aid, Manson Family 60s/70s; whereas the girls and company are supposed to feel like they're sort of a downbeat but uplifting group that might be scrappy enough to get through it all.

Mostly just felt like posting some sweet tunes. This week's update to the Sisters should be fun. Dan and Eddy meet. And Beatrice introduces a Necromancer.

>Cameo
Y'know, I'll see if we can toss something Green Knight's way in terms of a cameo. We might have an Anime Convention issue this next arc (Chel's idea for a summer plan). You do good work and I genuinely dig your stuff. I hope your hiatus goes well, I need to catch up.

>>83555276
Still love the last panel.

>>83547461
Struggle through it, or get help, or tell your audience and ask them what they might like to see how it can get better. Or just take a break and work on something that personally makes you happy.

>Polaris
not surprising in the slightest. i've been binging Pete & Pete lately. Between the gingers and the bizarreness, it feels like a significantly happier companion piece to The Sisters.
