As a matter of her existing at all, she was obviously there to give Ben a non-incestuous love interest. Cousin marriages are legal in a lot of states and in 90% of the world otherwise, but I guess it's still "icky" as far as pop culture is concerned. Her being a Jap is obviously to reel in the weebs. Overall, it's not a bad decision, makes a lot more sense than "lol alien powers, not magic" and Gwen getting together with Kevin "I only tried to murder you 10-15 times" Levin. Gwen becoming ugly was never proven to be an aimed effort.
