Fuck yes it's time to read some Calvin and Hobbes
Going to start off with one of my favorite arcs, with a gorgeously drawn, beautifully colored Sunday every 3 or 4 strips.
It's a magical world, let's go exploring!
Literally me in school
>>83518418
>>83518438
Right off the bat, Watterson makes a pretty smart, subtle joke about time travel making no sense
>>83518475
BOOM
Show me anything in the newspaper funnies that looks like this, it's fucking amazing
>>83518521
Any strips you want can be found fairly easily using this

These sundays get so ridiculously good around 91 or so, and just keep getting better each year.

another classic

Theres a lot of good monster designs in the Spaceman Spiff comics
>>83519103
Love this one
Also is literally anyone reading this thread
Spoilered for shota
>>83518683
Can't help but think of that erotic comic of this. Thr one with both Hobbes.
>>83519745
Shhhhh, shh shhh, quiet now
Anybody have the pearls before swine strips that Watterson did?
>>83518833
OP can't bump anymore
>>83519149
Yes, I'm here
Great stuff
>>83518521
Reminds me of:

>>83519149
Yes, loving it! Thanks OP.
>>83520279
Good. It's not suited for animation.
Not because it's the sacred cow it is, you just can't convey the same movement and beauty of Watterson's art in animation without a budget worthy of bankrupting Disney.
>>83520279
The voice of Calvin would have sucked, and the delivery on the whimsy would never have had the same impact.
>>83520151
Drawing something like this in class today would get the police called.
>>83520377
Plus how would Hobbes work, imaginary or real
Watterson didn't want animation to settle the issue
>>83519149
Course, you left me no choice. I didn't even want these feels right now.
Thanks OP.
>>83519067
Love this one
>>83520012
Silly boy, that is not how that works.
>>83518944
Oh hey, another arc proving calvin's reality warping abilities or a split personality disorder
>>83520882
I dont get it
Calvins a rude lil shit, but I guess I would be too if all my mom fed me was non-descript green mush
>>83521176
I think the connection he's talking about is her not wanting to explain it to him, so it's bedtime
>worm eaten corpse
jesus kid
This is a favorite of mine as well
>>83518754
>Drawing Calvin is easy! You just make a big mouth and add some hair!
Hah, I didn't remember this story but I do remember that line
Watterson gave a very accurate, real representation of being an out of place kid in grade school
>>83521365
was waiting for that one
I'm gonna stop saying which ones are my "favorites" because nearly every sunday strip for the last 4 or 5 years of the comic is my favorite.
>>83518418
That hits a little bit too close.
>>83518400
The unfortunate part about /co/ is that no one storytimes the volumes where Watterson actually provided commentary for certain strips.
On top of being great comics, the commentary was genuinely interesting.
If you get the chance, check out the Indispensable, The Authoritative, and The Essential Calvin and Hobbes Collections, as well as The Lazy Sunday Book. They all have these absolutely beautiful, full color, full page stories and poems that Watterson did just for the book.
>>83520068
>>83520368
Man, remember the binoculars debacle? That one hit close to home. His parents appeared pretty one-dimensional most of the time but they were a great commentary on modern parenting at the same time.
>>83521177
One of the best.
>>83521484
I'm not sure I really understood this page as a kid, but holy shit yes it is incredibly on-point.
>>83519575
Where's this from?
Calvin kills the mood at the Swingers party
>>83520431
just showing this strip to someone else in school today would get the police called
>>83521960
>Where's this from?
Just something Bill Watterson drew.
Everyone's favorite
never again will there be a time where people bought the newspaper just to read Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side
>>83519654
really reminds me of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
:^(
my god this comic is so fucking good, has any other work of art ever been the absolute peak of it's medium like Calvin and Hobbes is?
>>83521176
I believe it has to do with the unwillingness American parents have explaining sexual situations with their children.
She would rather just put him to bed, and he is questioning why anything to do with "kissing" gets him landed in bed.
Dinosaur costume Calvin a cute, A CUTE
>>83520431
Funnily enough I had a teacher in 1st grade who got very upset that I drew a gun as she had a strict policy against it, but another kid drawing a tank was fine because "it's not a gun it's a tank"
Calvin and Hobbes needs to be more popular on 4chan tbqph
>>83522329
Mine was Bloom County.
Watterson's opinions on comic books are pretty understandable considering the shit that was being released at the time
DEEPEST
FUCKING
LORE
>>83523039
Fucking brutal.
Actually, even as a parody of comics I'm surprised they printed that in the sunday funnies
>>83521177
>It's dog food. And don't call me "honey."
>>83523368
Haha holy shit I knew this page looked familiar
I mean aside from the art style too

>>83523526
That was a good thread
>>83523495
SIGH
>>83523563
I actually made it by mistake, I had meant to post the strip in the C&H thread that was going on, accidentally made a whole new thread that went amazing places
>>83519067
After all these years I finally noticed the kill markings on the F-14.
Someone turn this into a gif
>>83522882
fuck me I never did understand a fucking word when I read these when I was 10 but it's so good
I love the ones that are somewhat meta without breaking the 4th wall
>>83523967
Sledding comics may as well have been an entire genre to themselves
>>83523985
Incidentally, I've been using the 'drink water upside-down' trick ever since and it always works
And there we go, not even a fraction of the greatness Bill Watterson put onto the page. Go explore the rest of it yourself
>>83523996
Wait, was the 'noodle incident' ever shown?
>>83523526
It was so rare that Calvin's mom got to cut loose and enjoy herself. I'm glad for her.
>>83524087
No. That was the whole point
>the noodle incident
is this just a running gag or was there actually a noodle incident at some point in the comic?
>>83524177
Watterson said in the 10th Anniversary edition he never actually showed it because what you could come up with in your imagination would be way funnier than whatever he could draw
>>83524087
No, and it's better that it wasn't.
>>83524171
>>83524206
>>83524245
Fair enough. I didn't remember it getting multiple mentions before, is all.
>>83523678
Sorry for the problem with the boxes but i'm tired and I really need to sleep.
I'll do a better one tomorrow if the thread is still up
>>83524354
fukkin saved, thanks senpai
>>83524354
that's amazing
One of my favs
Thanks for the thread OP, I agree that 4channers should know about Calvin and his attitude
>>83523070
Wow I forgot about that. It was great to read as a kid and actually be invested in Hobbes being real and the people in the scenes where Calvin wasn't alone just not being able to see it. Now there's a little melancholy mixed in when my mind forces me to imagine him moving and talking for the Hobbes doll. That comic allows you to justify believing.
>>83524916
Actually, Calvin is in a coma and all of his shenanigans plus Hobbes are but a figment of his imagination
>>83524916
>>83525027
Why does it fucking matter
>>83523070
>That series of strips of Calvin tied to the chair, and even his dad admitting that he couldn't have done it himself.
Watterson really knew how to keep the reader guessing.
>>83518521
Does this edit make me a bad person
I plan on doing this shit to my kids and they will probably hate me for it
>>83525136
Oh, it's obvious to me now
The only way that could work is as follows: Calvin is in purgatory and Hobbes is the devil tormenting him
>>83525027
I prefer the fan strip where Calvin is put in a straight jacket. It's fine if he was a schizo or whatever, as long as he wasn't just pretending.
>>83525086
I feel like if it doesn't matter whether Hobbes is real or not to you then you're missing out a bit. It's not exactly a mindless kid's comic.
>>83523526
Reading this again makes me realize how much influence Calvin's mom had on me when writing my own characters.
>>83518400
I can't help but be a little sad every time I see C+H.
It was the last great newspaper comic. We will literally never see its like again.
>>83525253
>I feel like if it doesn't matter whether Hobbes is real or not to you then you're missing out a bit. It's not exactly a mindless kid's comic.
I don't think Watterson cared either. Imaginary Friends can be a narrative tool without being a plot device. Sometimes you have to take things at face value. Hobbes is a stuffed tiger or a real friend depending on the context.
>I prefer the fan strip where Calvin is put in a straight jacket. It's fine if he was a schizo or whatever, as long as he wasn't just pretending.
See, now you're just getting into speculative fan-fiction.
>>83524029
Let's Go Exploring.
Great words to end the comic.
>>83525445
>Donald Trump is in my closet!
That sounds like something you'd read in Bloom County.
Or maybe the Daily Kos headlines in this election cycle
>>83525445
>Donald Trump is in the closet
This is way funnier now that he's running for president
Trump 2016
So, what do you think Calvin became once he grew up?
>>83525640
a cartoonist. Calvin is Bill Watterson's inner child.
>>83525640
Tough to say, the economy isn't exactly welcoming to kids with his profile.
Cartoonist? Maybe he took up an office job like his dad, but became "that guy" at the office? He might be a stay-at-home dad while Susie brings home the bacon.

>>83525943

>>83525943
I can't stop laughing but I can't help but feel this comic has an awfully small audience of
You have to be familiar with C+H
You have to be familiar with the sickly-sweet fancomics of grown-up Calvin
You have to have seen enough of them to become sick of it
>>83519691
>Hurry up, what am I paying you for?
>You don't pay me. We don't even exist. We're just a clever visual metaphor used to personifiy the abstract concept of thought.
>>83525904
>>83526084
Yeah, but we happen to be included within that demographic
Inside jokes are only bad when I don't get them!
>>83526147
I wish I had kids...
>>83526084
You forgot the crying statue of liberty
>>83525784
>>83525805

I didn't know about these ones.
>>83526365
>>83526422
>>83523439
Holy shit I don't remember ever seeing this one. And I thought I had seen all of them.
>>83526365
>>83526422
>>83526434
Too sweet
C+H always had that bit of cynicism to it
That 90's cynicism that wasn't overdone and clownish the way cynicism was in the aughts
>>83525640
I'm partial to the theory that says Calvin grew up to be Frazz
>>83525514
I think Watterson cared about the reader's view of Hobbes, he let you choose for yourself whether he's real or not. I think he was capable of looking at his strip from a child's perspective.
>>83522873
>it's not a gun it's a tank
lawl What an idiot.
>>83519788
>/v/ as a child
Keep it up please OP, I love nothing more than Calvin and Hobbes
>>83523563
"Calvin, go do something you hate! Being miserable builds character!"
>>83521796
If anyone wants, I could try and do a story time of it. I have the book somewhere, so I can just find the strips online and copy the commentary.
>>83519391
Don't tempt nature. It has a way of slamming you and dragging you across dozens of meters of razor-sharp coral.
>>83527229
Elementary school teachers are fucking retarded
I still remember when one told me that drummers always play to the beat of their heart. Even as a kid I knew that's bullshit
>>83519103
Oh man, I used to fantasize about doing this back in elementary school.
Thankfully I don't have autism, so I never actually tried it.
>>83519627
I always loved the fact that you could see Michigan in that one panel. Really nice touch.
>>83522873
>"it's not a gun it's a tank"
I swear, sometimes it's the teachers who need to be taught, not the kids.
>that one time my little sister in first grade gave me a hug during lunch, but accidentally bumped her teeth on my hip and started bleeding, at which point her teacher blamed me for it and tried to punish me because "hugging is not allowed at school"
I was still an elementary schooler mind you.
>>83520537

>>83527466
I'm interested.
>>83528458
>smack an innocent girl's teeth in
>"hurr durr why won't the teachers let me assault people"
>>83528689
I can't tell if you're trying to make a joke or not. Either way you're failing.
Love this one.
>>83522317
>Calvin wants to PIERCE THE HEAVENS, but his mom won't let him.
>>83519067
Am I the only one who heard the Swat Kats theme while reading this?
>>83519864

>>83521591
I've always been inexplicably aroused by the sight of Calvins mum in that space suit, and I still can't put my finger on just why I am.

>>83533485

I take it as just the artstyle being influenced. Character-wise they're not really the same at all.
>>83521591
>>83532305
>>83521544
This was the very first Calvin and Hobbes strip I read. When I was young, I got a whole stack of book collections, one of them being Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat. Naturally, I opened that book first, and this was the first thing I saw. I didn't quite understand it at first, since this page was clearly designed for those who were already involved with Calvin and Hobbes, but this page introduced me to a wonderful series of stories about a boy and his tiger.
This Sunday strip will always have a special place in my heart for that reason.
>>83524087
Well, it was never shown, but there was a comic where Calvin shoves spaghetti into his shirt to make it look like his guts are falling out, which could be the noodle incident
>>83532595
He's got a point. One, it's pretty obvious what he's doing, so there's not really a need to ask, and two, he's not going to implicate himself and get himself into huge trouble, so asking him what he's doing is barking up the wrong tree
>>83519029
>his eye twitches involuntarily
Fuckin' A.. this one made me laugh so hard when it came out that I had tears. It was then I realized the compilation books had to be collected. Buddy and I still talk this one 28 odd years layer.
>>83526508
But it makes sense, because Bacon is understood by his parents in a way that Calvin never was.
>>83519544
>imaging a cartoon looking like C&H
>>83523098
This is Watterson's very favorite strip.
>>83525720
>Maybe he took up an office job like his dad, but became "that guy" at the office
I can imagine him being somewhat of a dickhead at his job but being good enough to avoid getting fired, kinda like David Thorne I suppose
>>83533995
and there goes any semblance of a boner I may have had before now. Thanks for curing me anon
>>83523627
Oh, my heart. Being a kid for a while was pretty nice.
>>83520239
I miss being a kid.
>>83521177
These were some of my absolute favorite. The one where he's the doctor and telling her she needed lobotomy, iirc. lol
>>83519575
Did watterson ever give advice on how to be a good cartoonist or is he one of those guys who keep to themselves and avoid saying anything about other comics?
>>83524020
Personally I find fully inflating my lungs and holding it in to be the most effective method, though it probably differs from person to person.
>Brother is a lil' shit exactly like calvin, but older
>Loves comic book strips
Well, I know what I'm getting him on his birthday. May the heavens have mercy on our souls, it's all inspiration
Which book should I get him first?
>>83522399
>/co/
Ever since I started watching Moone Boy, I've been hearing Hobbes with Chris O'Dowd's voice and it strangely works perfectly.
>>83526084
Also the calvin-pissing-on-[insert enemy brand here] some faggots have on their trucks.
Calvin and Hobbes was never really part of my childhood. I probably first saw it when I was like 15.
>>83523874
What sort of kid was actually allowed to go roam the woods?
>>83530655
That would be a nice "imagination comic"
>>83538647
I was, as was pretty much everyone in my neighborhood back when I was a kid, and that was only back in the 90's.
I find this one too real sometimes
>>83524370
>>83524416
Here is the better version as promised
>>83520012
Why do I get the feeling that this one is personal experience?
>>83525640
Definitely something creative, even if it was just writing copy.
>>83523412
