I think that first one of the Contract with God is very powerful, with the man who's daughter died. There's a lot going on there, this questions of mans connection to God and all that. Just the art of the man in the rain walking home I think it very striking.

The others aren't quite as good as that.

My favorite is probably pic related. It's hard to decide though.

Starman was amazing, I've been meaning to read it again for ages.

Also All Star Superman, Astro City, and, on a much lower scale, Invincible.

This thread seems to have some great recommendations on non superhero comics though, which I've been meaning to check out more, what else can you suggest?

Oh and I'm very curious, I know nothing about the Life and Times of Scrooge Mcduck, or any of the duck comics for that matter, why is it considered so amazing?
>>
>>83512313
>>83512384
>>83512470
It's more than that. You can read the manga as this standard seinen martial art thing were the main character is an asshole and where the fights are kinda cool. But it's really about the place of man in society. The main character's problem is that he always felt locked from his true self. He's an edgy kid that was always bullied by everyone that eventually snapped and that has to suffer for the rest of his life. He's basically stuck in a circle of violence where he has no-where else to escape since everyone hates him (and he hates everyone in return).

Saying it like this, it sounds like the kind of book an angsty kid would love. But the story and the characters are really well done and you'll find eventually that the manga isn't about the fights but about what's around it. You'll be more fascinated by Ryo's spirals into violence than his next tournament.

To some, not me. I don't know why I'm allergic to it I just am.
Might have been different if he'd just made the character and not made him look like him, or had him look like him but not taken time out of the story to do his old bits. Just completely ruined the immersion of an otherwise very good story.
They're like Puck and Ishidoro in Berserk, they get in the way but until someone goes through and makes a version where they're almost completely edited out you're stuck with them, there, distracting you.

Start off with Lee/Kirby's FF, it's a little dated though with it being from the 60s, but it's pretty bonkers and hilarious too. Then you can get into Byrne and Hickman's runs. But really, you can read any of them, Fantastic Four don't really seem to have any "bad" runs in my opinion.
>>
>>83517610

While Hickman's run is great in isolation it builds a lot on what came before. If you don't mind really digging into modern F4 I think it's best to start with Waid and read up to Hickman.

The Goon
It was so good.
Weird, Fun, Hilarious, Depressing.
You never really knew the kind of story you were going to get from issue to issue.
It did a great job of tying all those smaller stories together. But still for the most part being the kind of comic you could come in on just about anywhere.
The art was great.

What precisely is it about?
I started reading it, and so far it's fucking bizarre but pretty cool. Just wish I knew when the other foot is going to drop, so far it's him trying not to be insecure around his girlfriend and monologuing about Manga, with occasional moments of incredible horror.
>>
>>83525020
It's actually awesome. It's what DC vs. Marvel SHOULD have been.

>tfw I found an issue on a local store

It was pretty recent. I just started buying physical.
I'm still getting the hardcover since finding the other issues will be a pain in the ass. Besides, the only other one I want is Thunderworld Adventures.

You mean the China arc? It's widely considered as the lowest point of the series. The arc after is really great and a good return to the usual mma stuff. The last arc is pretty fine. The villains are pretty great and it ties well with the very beginning of the series by going back to the street fights. I'm a bit conflicted on the ending tough as while it is well written, I feel the author could have go on further. Anyway, you'll see.

Honestly, this isn't my favorite of all time, but it is my favorite comic of the 2010s so far.

I feel you haven't learn the meaning of decompressed story-telling until you've read I am a Hero. The author REALLY takes his time setting the pieces and the setting. Don't worry tough as the action starts right after the first volume which serves as a nice introduction to our main character and his life. It shows he isn't just some guy but a guy with his own sets of problem.

The manga turns into the typical zombie apocalypse scenario right during volume 2. What makes it special tough is the deconstruction of it. By setting the story in Japan, the scenario can safely avoids all the usual cliche we find in zombie stories and instead, focus on the characterization and world-building. There's no gun blazing or knife wielding hero like we find in TWD. It's just a guy with anxiety doing his best to survive and emancipate himself.

Shame that award means diddly squat now. Bendis has F I V E Eisner awards. Even Unreadable Squirrel Girl got nominated.

Not going against any point, just generally jumping in to make a comment on it.

So far I'm digging it. I like the little looks at the Manga industry, and the first chapter does a really good job of making me feel like something horrible is going to happen.
Mainly I'm just wondering about what was going on in the first little bit where he was seeing ghosts and makes a Circle of Protection out of comics and textbooks.

Man, I was so excited when I saw this in my college library, I stole it.
I didn't like this it all. Something about the formatting of the dialog in the speech bubbles was really unnatural and stilted. I know it's translated, but I felt like whoever did it, did a bad job.

Three of which were for Daredevil (and USM and Alias when they were running) one for Powers and one for "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition", back in 1999 when he was an exciting new writer. None of shitty post-DD work got an eisner

I second this, captures the hero's journey trope better than any other comic I can think of, except maybe Bone but it was too weak in other respects.

Look up what nominate means. And it's always been this way. Nominations are decided by a committee that changes every year, so some years it's great and some years shit like Cry For Justice gets nominated by corporate flunkies.
