Even as he circulated the defunct MSPA forums he knew that the smiles disappeared when he passed by. He received so many menacing letters and death threats that he could read them without any reaction except curiosity. He kept to his apartment all day, flipping over character concepts, looking at his original story in every flash, walk-around, and kickstarter. Kazerad came up from Obscurity at one P.M. on the 8th. He had no grand scheme. No strategy. No agreement with higher authorities. Nothing but a vague longing for glory, and a generalized wish for revenge against Hussie. Kazerad would be ordered to serve a life sentence in Webcomic Penitentiary for second degree murder. It's hard to say anything conclusive with Equius, Gamzee and Nepeta given the extent of their possible abilities. In particular, whilst Equius' ability to just destroy things isn't questionnable, how adept he is at fighting is given he just seems to smash things? We don't entirely know how he'd deal with an opponent who can use actual tactics against him, such as the bow and flash stepping about, given we don't know how adept the robots he fought were. Same problem with Nepeta, she lived as a near-savage troll hunting wild animals with no problem; so arguably she should be one of the most combat adept of the trolls in meele terms along with Equius, Gamzee and Feferi.
Gamzee's cloun powers too could have given him the edge, certainly over Nepeta as the subjugation part of the chucklevoodoos could have kicked in.

Well, whilst it's a legitimate complaint against Terezi and how she handled the whole retcon situation there are things to be said in her defence. Primarily she was near death and wasn't really fit to think straight given what had just gone down.
She drops down dead soon after sending John on his way, so she had to quickly think of the one thing which could likely change their end without straying too far from what had already happened, to ensure if it went wrong again they could control the changes better the next time. The obvious problem being she could have likely had John save Nepeta and Equius very easily had she thought of the events leading to their deaths.
That's why I've always felt that Karkat never revealed that he sent Equius to his death, so Terezi wouldn't know how to avoid Equius' fate and thus Nepeta's too.

I can't tell you how disappointed I was when Equius and Gamzee didn't end up fighting, for the very reason you listed. Insane strength versus insane speed. Add Nepeta into the mix as the wildcard that could tip the favour to either side and you'd have had an amazing moment in the comic.
Though I wasn't sure if Gamzee had increased durability due to his purple blood. I liked to imagine the higher up you went on the spectrum the more durable you were, given that the more noble blooded trolls had increased lifespans and seadwellers need to survive both in deep ocean and on land. Something like a character refusing to change or a character actively becoming a worse person are arcs just the same as a character bettering themselves over the course of the story.
But what's important about Equius's death is that the comic acknowledged that he failed to change. His death was karmic and it had a direct impact on his loved ones. And down the line he even felt remorse over it.
Lot's of characters in homestuck refused change as people, but most were never punished for it, if it was even acknowledged in-comic at all.
That's what made Equius's arc and actual arc and not just a shitty writer writing a shitty story.

We'll never truly know the thought process, but he likely didn't care about those characters designated as joke characters. It's odd as he started off using secondary and tertiary characters well for main character development. A good example being the guardians for the kids, or Nanasprite for John in particular.
But when it came to the trolls he completely forgot how to utilise them, which showed with how the main trolls ended up as character development messes as the story progressed. Unlikely, Karkat has way too many deep set issues to make for a quick fix. I felt him and Terezi would never work together romantically for that very reason, in addition to Terezi's own issues added into the mix. Even talking through it would be pretty ineffectual, given the severity of their personal issues, Karkat in particular. Perhaps if they'd had some actual character development it could have worked out, but they didn't.

Immense self hatred that stems from his mutant blood, an issue he's had to live with for all his life, limiting what he could do and aspire to do in the future due to fear of culling. That's a massive personal issue that results in him antagonizing people who try and interact with him as his second issue is massive overreactions to events surrounding him as a mask for his own conflicted feelings about himself, his ability as an individual and his relationships with others. The guys has real issues with himself that make him snap at people close to him, perhaps as a defense mechanism? There's likely multiple ways it could be taken but the end result is someone like Terezi, who has large dependency issues, questionable morals and has big issues with being genuine with her actual feelings regarding herself and others, is going to clash.
Perhaps talking through those issues would help, but it's a treating the symptoms not the cause situation. They'd end up at each others throats eventually.
