Well I don't quite trust the book because the author gets a lot of shit like Hans' age wrong and takes a lot of liberties with the narrative, rewriting scenes pretty differently from how they are in the movie itself etc. But that's what the info is. I'm guessing that in the 1840s they didn't have a lot of info so him "studying her" would have just been studying Arendelle or such, and maybe he thought that them being reclusive wasn't due to their personal nature but something to do with the princesses being underage and the parents dead or something. After all the castle had been closed since Elsa was just 8, it had been her father's decision, so maybe it wasn't attributed to her.
I mean, had she been normal, Elsa would have been very actively looking for a fiance, she's single, ruling alone and already 21. The coronation ball should have been like the opening episode of The Bachelorette: Arendelle or something. I just think that suddenly switching a princess who's been marketed to preschoolers and toddlers and their parents as "normal" (=straight) for half a decade, in a situation where Disney has never ever had a single canon gay human character introduced before, is completely impossible.
I think that they'll slowly start introducing gay characters; first in the background, like with Finding Dory and the lesbian couple with a kid in the background, then as supportive Oaken -tier characters, named but still not crucial, and finally secondary support characters and eventually protagonists.
But they sure as fuck won't start with the most iconic cashcow protagonist they currently have, and most likely the gay characters will be outed as gay in their first appearances so that people can form their opinions of them in peace.

I doubt Disney considers a US parent boycott of the film a problem. Only the hardest right parents will totally boycott it. Most won't care or not care enough to keep their kids from it. The issue with Disney is the Foreign markets. Most middle eastern countries would outright ban the import of the film if it had a openly homosexual character as would China. I don't think you quite understand how parents think. I'm fairly sure most would feel just slightly uncomfortable and duped enough about a lesbian being suddenly pushed on their kid after that they'd quietly try to steer them towards other franchises, just not go to the return viewings, buy a different dress, different toys etc. They maybe wouldn't organise a huge boycott or screech in media, because after all they want to be progressive and support the gays. They'd just quietly not buy as much, if any, Elsa stuff for their kids, and quietly feel betrayed by Disney. No-one likes to feel tricked, which is what people would feel like if Elsa would suddenly be turned gay.
