Damn, Marvel redid the issue. Good on them, and the result isn't half bad.

Aside from the hentai thing this reads a lot better and makes me care about the character more. I mean really the only pictured hero that got his powers for being a dude was Cap, and he'sfrom yhe 40s.

I can't wait for someone to tell Rich about this.
>>83491911
Not mine, found it on reddit. But I've little doubt half the guys in here could write something better than what was first published.
The worst thing about this is that the first two issues at least had potential for something enjoyable and then it just went full throttle retarded.
>>83490910
Referring to the original text, does Marvel even read Marvel anymore?

The only thing that can really stop this is SJW backlash. At a certain point they'll have to notice how fake and awful it all seems and just stop giving a shit.
>>83494343
It'll stop when the loosely-overlapping groups of suburban millenials we've come to know as 'SJWs' finally get bored and latch onto another medium the majority of them probably persecuted the other kids in junior school for enjoying.
It'll probably be pen-and-paper tabletop games, like Dungeons And Dragons, or Warhammer.
>>83494292
this is fine. the fuck are you even upset about

What was originally about getting gender politics out of vidya got interpreted by various gaming news channels as an anti-feminism movement. It snowballed from there when major television news outlets picked it up.
When every major outlet is peddling the same purposely misinterpreted story, and Wikipedia defines that story as fact, it isn't surprising that people would think the movement was about sexism.

>>83496890
Disagreeing with SJW is being a hateful misogynistic bigot.
Is it that hard to understand?
I don't have a dog in this fight, because this is the first I've seen of this, but the Redditor's version is a million times better.
The original focuses on what you can be given, what can be done passively.
The ethic of hard work is a far better lesson. There are a lot of people I've met who were praised for their intelligence, but when things evened out with their peers, they didn't know how to study or work hard--they just wondered why they suddenly felt stupid.
I've been working my butt off to be intelligent and productive since I was 5, when some idiot adult told me I should be more mature like my sister, who was 8 at the time. Like, no duh, of course I'm not going to be as mature as my sister.
But I decided to try for it anyway. She has always been praised for her natural intelligence--even got a 29 on the ACT on her first try. I took the ACT three times in order to outdo her. I now have a Master's degree, and my sister does almost nothing with herself because she has no motivation to do so.
I'm not saying I'm a good role model--I'm saying that perseverance, motivation, and effort go a lot further than what you're born with.
I've always hated Sleeping Beauty, because all she does is lie there and wait to be saved. She had one job: to not get her finger stabbed. And she couldn't even do that. Her merit is based on her beauty, not anything she DOES. This new version of that comic encourages a good work ethic, not waiting for someone to give her what she wants.
The original also goes out of its way to be "ewwwwww, 'girly' things." There is room for both in life--I promise.
Man even the original shows she was wrong and worked to become a hero. how sensitive can you be
>>83496373

This is something I hate in modern books, especially ones aimed at a young female audience.
Why do we have to shame girls for wanting to play with dolls or get married? Isn't feminism supposed to be about everybody being equal and free to live how they want, whether or not it aligns with societal roles?
>>83498709
Well, they were. Now they're about male Privilege.

>elaborate
It's blatant bait.
>>83498981
Do people pay taxes on toilet-paper?
>>83498981
I can't really take a stance on this, since I'm a dude and tampons hold no relevancy in the quality of my daily life, but it's kinda fucked how "I'm a middle-upper class woman in America and I have to pay for tampons" is an issue while "women are raped/killed/sold as property in foreign countries" isn't.
Like, not that you can't have two kinds of problems (I don't give a shit that there's starving kids in China, mom, I don't like asparagus), but if I was a feminist or activist, I'd probably dedicate my life to ending sex trafficking or giving women in the Middle East some modicum of human rights as opposed to complaining about air conditioning or the way people sit on a bus.
Like, if you want your comic to have a strong feminist message, wouldn't you make it about Mockingbird rescuing sex slaves or something?
Like, there's the Mad Max: Fury Road "we're actually kicking ass and fighting legitimate evil" kind of feminism, and then there's the Marvel Comics "I've got a trendy haircut and an obligatory gay best friend, we're going to spout memes and do nothing of consequence while lecturing strawmen on millenial gender politics" kind of feminism.
>>83499510
>not knowing modern feminism is just MEism.
>>83499510
I still don't understand why it's a problem to pay taxes on tampons, don't we do that on toilet-paper too?
>>83499510
Because that's a copout. It's like saying gays shouldn't worry about being able to get married or being discriminated against here because there are other places where it's worse. We don't have to fix every other issue in the world before moving on down some kind of list, and people have every right to want to deal with the problems that effect them and their home. This mindset has never, ever been a legitimate or rational argument.

But gays can get married now.
It's literally the law of the land.
There's a few backwards idiots who will continue to be bigots, but I feel like harmless words should be a way smaller priority than countries where it's totally legal to hurl gay guys off roofs.
People try to push modern feminism as being about unity, but if it was really about unity, the focus would be more on helping everyone everywhere attain basic human rights rather than on saving citizens of a far more equal, developed, and dare I say privileged nation a couple of bucks at the store.
It's like, I'm sorry that a girl got catcalled on her way to work. That sucks and you shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable by some asshole. But that asshole is just an asshole and doesn't represent society as a whole. Considering that there are some countries where you'd be stoned to death for wearing yoga pants, I feel like we've got it pretty good here. Assholes will always be a problem, but stuff like that is small potatoes compared to legitimate actual evil and injustice that is being committed to this day elsewhere in the world.
Like, if someone wants to campaign for tampons and stuff like that, go for it, more power to em if that's what they're passionate about. But they need to stop doing it in the name of "women's rights", considering they're only helping women who already HAVE rights, while ignoring women who literally have NONE.
It's like if we had a charity that donated money to only able-bodied veterans instead of disabled ones. Like sure, show your support for the troops, but you're not really doing any good for the people who really need legitimate help.

>>83500459

This happens all the time, just look at GamerGate and the bile they spew.
Modern feminism is like a food drive for people who are in that category of "eh, I COULD eat, like, if you guys wanna go to Wawa, I'll get something I guess, I could go either way really", but ignores people who are actually legitimately starving.
>>83500399
>It's like if we had a charity that donated money to only able-bodied veterans instead of disabled ones.
It's kind of the opposite, really. When you say people shouldn't care about an issue because it's worse somewhere else, that'd be like saying that only disabled veterans should be helped, and we'll take care of the able bodied ones later. Taking care of the issues at home doesn't mean ignoring the other ones, and dealing with the other ones doesn't require ignoring the ones at home.
>>83500529
Are you saying women are mentally ill?

Like I said, it's not like you can't have different kinds of problems, but if someone wants to focus on women's rights, you'd think they'd focus on giving ALL women rights.
People can work towards the small issues, but no one gives a shit about the REAL issues. Because fighting for women's rights in the middle east is a lot harder and requires a lot more dedication than signal-boosting hashtags and calling people shitlords on Tumblr.
Like, there was discrimination against Jews in America during WW2. And that's horrible, disgusting, a dark side of this nation in a troubled time.
But at the same time, there were Jews in Poland who had it way worse than "kids tossed pennies at me at school".
Like, suffering isn't invalidated by suffering of a greater magnitude, but one should CLEARLY be a bigger priority, and I don't understand why so many modern "activists" don't get this.

Should taxpayers have to pay for toothpaste and q-tips now? Is it a crime against humanity that people need to buy shampoo and soap? What is the fucking problem here? It's a complete non-issue and makes feminism look like a joke because they'll put way more time and effort into these kind of bullshit arguments rather than put it towards the more serious problems because of slacktivism.
>>83497185
>The ethic of hard work is a far better lesson. There are a lot of people I've met who were praised for their intelligence, but when things evened out with their peers, they didn't know how to study or work hard--they just wondered why they suddenly felt stupid.

>>83501850
Huh? The concern there is a basic necessity like that being taxed as a luxury item. Many states don't put sales taxes on things like food and clothing, and there's a reasonable argument that something like this should fit that. There's also a push for trying to make sure something is available for people who can't afford them, since it's something that donation charities don't get enough of, but that's more of a separate matter, and still isn't anything like you're taking it as.

But it is a fucking luxury item. You can live without it. Hell, there are feminists that do the whole "free-bleeding" thing because they think tampons are a creation of the patriarchy and their periods are beautiful expressions of their womanhood. Tampons are literally treated the same as all other hygiene product, as they should be.
>>83498242
For some reason I feel like only exposure to the character creators of this comic had was Agents of Shield.
>>83501952
The few cents difference it makes are not the issue of course.
It's being taken as a symbol of a larger attitude because that's what fuels feminism, they need to be able to portray women as an oppressed class in order to justify their own existence.

that was the last page, that was it, the comic as a whole, was blaming men that she couldn't be a super hero, That there were no female super heroes before her, even though you see Susan Richards lunch box. This whole book was about how unfair the world is to women, goes as far to victimize the villian and gives no fucks about the men the villian killed buy had time to save the middle school girls. If it had an agenda to push for equality, it did the exact opposite of that.
>>83502029
Jesus Christ. You are really butthurt for the sake of your state getting like $0.12 off of the sale of tampons.
And bear in mind, in the places where this concept of luxury items in sales tax exists, 20 pounds of shimp or a $500 leather jacket aren't typically "luxury items", and end up being except from sales tax as being "basic necessities" because they're food and clothing. There's obviously some room for criticism in such systems, and the idea that something like tampons should be considered a necessity might be disagreeable, but not outrageous.
>>83502029
Let's list things that are necessary to survive, but people pay money for them, I'll start: food.
>>83502127
Where I live, most foods are exempted from sales tax but clothing most definitely is not.
>>83502127
The fact there is a fucking movement because there is a $0.12 tax on tampons is what infuriates me.

Feminists used to be about equality, now the 3rd wave is just about getting revenge in the 50s, I can say for a fact none of these women who are in their 20s to 30s never went through the trails of 50s 60s and 70s. Things have gotten better, not fully equal, but better and we will continue to get better until we are equal. However there is this false equivalence that the 3rd wavers put on themselves, they act as though the men of the past are here today, and expect the men of today to pay for the atrocities of the past.
These people are young and never had a life but inside a classroom. They are devoid of real world experience and social skills, and I am sure they would also blame that on the patiarchy.
If anything there is a lot of false flagging happening on both sides, but the ones who are getting their work published are falsflagging this generation of men for the past these female writers never lived in.
>>83502166
And where I live now, nothing is exempt. In other states, like PA, clothing is. It all varies.
>>83502127
Crunching the math using the price of name brand tampons not purchased in bulk and assuming the woman doubles up with a tampon and panty liner, also name brand, comes out to about $225 dollars paid in taxes on feminine hygiene products over a woman's lifetime. HuffPo's article on the cost of a woman's period had to add in a bunch of tangentially related items to make it look like a big deal.
>>83502276
3rd Wave is fucking dead. It died in the mid- to late-90s when girl power was co-opted by the mainstream as something to be commercialized. Current feminism more closely resembles post-2nd Wave shit from the 80s.
>>83500749
because it's a mix of guilt and spoiled activists unaware or purposely ignoring on the world they live in. They want to point the finger of blame on everybody else because they have hate for their own society for being successful from a dark past. They ignore events that led up to this point that tried to remedy the past but it's not enough. In some sense yes it wasn't enough, but logically speaking in a world of illogical people, what would you expect?
The issue boils down to now, spoiled activists have created their boogy man and so has their counter parts created their straw man of the activists.
It's no longer about the actual issue now, it's about name calling and controlling the current narritive of our current history.
This shit doesn't solve problems it creates more.
>>83502276
That's why I don't take "feminists" seriously as an adults. They are like 12 years olds who learned about global warming and got spooked and decided to become activists, except it's called a phase because you are supposed realize world doesn't depend on you and just pass on activism.
These fucking guys learned about history and about how things they never experienced were happening a century ago and they still kick and scream about something. English is not my first language, but at one point in time my country's people were literally slaves to Mongolians, you don't fucking see me demanding that all Mongolians kiss my feet the way Han was making his vassals. It's an embarassing point in the past of our history, but we are past that, that's why history lessons exist in school, so we would know the difference between then and now. And feminists aren't adults because they haven't passed that lesson in which they make a connection and realize then is not now.
>>83501850
well the thing is tampons are made for only those who have a vagina. The issue is men don't have to use them and women need them. So maybe a basic tampon supply by the government should hand those out, buy if women want better they have to buy brand trampons.
>>83502474
So because it's a hygiene product for women, that means the government should hand them out? Women don't need them any more than any other hygiene product.

>>83502518
those are not nessesary to actually be that gender in today's standards. Remember the whole a woman doesn't have to have a vagina to be a woman?
>>83502566
Same here, but that's what you get for a competing market that, when government is involved, should be a basic generic threshold. Government should only be there for the basic nessesities. I don't have a vagina, so if women says they need it, then give it to them. Only to a certain logical point that is.
>>83502474
How about just not letting hygiene products that women need be taxed?
>>83502432
There was this short story I read in college about a black woman thinking of giving this historical blanket of the civil war to a museum or keeping it because it's hers. Tumblr feminism is some straight up Dworkin shit and more closely resembles 80s sex-negative feminism and 70s political feminism. Exclusionary safe spaces come directly from second-wave as does political lesbianism, the anti-porn movement, and the concept of the male gaze and heteronormativity. Like I said, what we're seeing now more closely resembles what we got in the 80s, which was a different beast compared to the economic focus that dominated the 60s and 70s. While you'll some things taken from 3rd wave, most notably the concept of intersectionality and queer feminism, the moralizing and and sex-negative narratives look exactly like the 80s when NOW and the Moral Majority aligned on social issues.
>>83502664
You can't have something for nothing, giving a generic version away for the amount you would tax a brand tampon, So you would just pay the tax of the tampon, because like other anons said, it's a luxury, but it needs to be produced.
>>83502772
Ok fair enough, but since those days are long gone and the accumulation of modern time ideals wouldn't you say this is the 3rd wave? It takes the worst from the 2nd wave and adds more to it especially thanks to modern times.

Third wave is widely considered to have started with the riot grrrl movement in 1991. That's not really true but it gives a concise date rather than a vague set of years in the late 80s/early 90s. The DIY/punk aspects of third wave got commercialized heavily and that led to its splintering and decline by the end of the decade. If I had to define where we're at currently, I'd go with post-third wave much like how I'd describe the 80s as post-second wave.

Character age is nebulous and fluid in comics, but let's assume that she was somehow a teen when Johnny Storm and Thor went public so she could have them as rolemodels...
Mockingbird debuted as an adult woman in 1971 and became a superhero in 1976, so the original lineups of the F4, X-Men, and Avengers predate her. Even Scarlet Witch (as an Avenger) and Polaris do...though Storm didn't show up 'til 75.

It's pretty easy to tell when the declaration comes from the TV station where Dick Profit is the star and the other news crawls read things like "super-powered teenaged girl goes hysterical" and "scientist says women aren't fit for elected power". because you are partly right, it doesn't take much for people in /co/ to go off topic, buy in this thread it's on point with this comic. It's an unrionic satire of itself. Johnny Storm and Peter Parker are the same age, and Pete has canonically been Spider-Man since he was 15. Pete's age was given as 32 pre-OMD and post-OMD he's been nebulously late 20s. At the time Mockingbird debuted she already had a PhD and was a SHIELD agent while Pete was an undergrad in college. Even with the nebulous character ages she'd have to have at least half a decade on Spider-Man, the Human Torch, the O5 X-Men, and a year or two on Wasp.

What would they even do that could affect tabletop gaming?
It's not like other kinds of media where the consumer NEEDS new content on a regular basis. The moment a sourcebook comes out with content players don't like in it, they just don't buy the new edition and continue playing the one they already play.
That's the entire reason Pathfinder exists, people who had grown accustomed to D&D 3.5 didn't want to upgrade to 4th edition, they just wanted to keep playing something like 3.5
>>83503264
guys don't have this happen to them? I remember peter being bullied because of what he was wearing, even people called his costume style butt ugly. style it self isn't genderspecific.
>>83503264
Not relevant. Kids don't know what the athletes and celebrities they look up to are saying and doing when they're not on TV.
Sue Storm and Wasp were on TV every single time the F4 and Avengers were, therefore every young girl growing up at the dawn of the Marvel Age had highly visible female superhero rolemodels.
>>83498242

>buy in this thread it's on point with this comic
Not really. Easily more than half of the posts are generic statements about feminism and tampons rather than the actual content of the comic.
>It's an unrionic satire of itself. Victimizing it's self and half the population of the world. Litterally in the crawl text of the TV in other pages it says "women are crazy" just to fuel that Fem rage.
Yeah it's definitely an awful comic written extremely clumsily, but that has little to do with its message and more to do with how terribly it delivers it.
But here we're mostly discussing the (assumed) message. Which I guess is something that comes up when discussing fiction, but I wish it didn't so much, because there's really not much to discuss there beyond every anon assessing their moral ideals, which really doesn't have that much to do with the piece of fiction itself.
But hey, I guess I can only blame whoever was the fuckhead who wrote this book for putting their message before quality writing.
>>83503226
Then Marvel needs to be consistent about Hammond's facial features being obscured by his flames, the one defining feature they use to distinguish him from Johnny while they're on fire. It also doesn't change the fact that Bobbi should have been around college age when the modern Marvel timeline started.
>>83503226
60's Johnny and Hammond look identical and the scene is anachronistic because Cyclops is wearing his 1980's X-Factor costume, I don't want to hear your "but muh Invaders!" bullshit
>>83503325
Not really. Easily more than half of the posts are generic statements about feminism and tampons rather than the actual content of the comic.
the comic literally says sexism is over now let's talk tampons in the crawl space.
The writer makes so many mistakes it shows her lack of education on telling a story, or some one was feeding her lines.
>>83503280
People play Pathfinder because they're either deluded about it fixing problems with 3.5 or they love playing casters. People who wanted to keep playing something like 3.5 kept playing 3.5. Also tabletops already dealt with this shit back in the 80s with BADD and the satanic panic and the early 90s when White Wolf started releasing stuff.
>>83503304
Concerns over fashion tended to come up way more often when female characters were concerned, at the exclusion of more important issues. Which honestly is sort of realistic, it's just that writing female superheroes as caring more about their social life than superheroing comes off a bit dickish.
>>83503305
Yes, the women who can respectively become invisible and microscopic were highly visible role models for girls...
>>83503377
Peter Parker's whole character is "I hate the way superheroing cuts into my social life".
Marvel characters are SUPPOSED to be written dickishly.
>>83503316
This particular instance is a joke (although I don't think you actually got it), but the book is filled with so many unironic feminist statements that it's a bit hard to tell what's satire and what isn't.
I mean shit, Bobbi here is being smug about preventing the police from shooting a girl who had killed 3 guys (at least 1 intentionally).
>>83503330
Nigga they gave Cyclops 2 eyes, you're asking for too much here.
>>83503399
Yeah, they used their powers at the end of the fight when news crews showed up ALL the time.
Nigga do you even know what the F4's origin story is? Reed turned the team into the 60's version of god damned reality show celebutantes specifically so that they'd be too publicly visible for the government to make them disappear and experiment on.
>>83494514
>>83503377
This is true in the earlier days of comics, buy if a woman so much as says anything about her personal life specifics, people get up in arms over it stating, oh she is a woman so she must blah blah blah. Not thinking she is a fictional woman with her own specific likes and dislikes. The problem is people need to stop selfinserting themselves into these characters that have their own personality.
>>83503409
Nah, I read the whole thing and I'm convinced it can't be serious. It's ridiculous. I don't know anything about the author though, if you told me (she?) is a feminist in real life I'd be convinced that it's not just a 30 page joke.
>>83503372
>the comic literally says sexism is over now let's talk tampons in the crawl space.
Yes and no, as explained before that's a strawman, not an author statement, which should be obvious to anyone with basic pattern recognition.
It would be more interesting to talk about how Bobbi chose to save that girl's life despite her straight-up killing a cop than about a shitty one-off joke.
You know, when you actually stop and think about it, the women of Marvel tend to be more powerful than the men.
Yeah Cyclops exists but he exists on a team with Storm, Emma Frost, and Jean Grey. Wolverine can be beaten by Shadowcat. She-Hulk has control over her powers in a way Hulk can only dream of. Sue Storm can kill anything that requires oxygen with barely any effort at all. Carol has all the powers of Sentry but none of the psychoses. Hell Monica Rambeau is an even bigger game breaker.
And that's the problem. This brand of feminism is so concerned with fighting the good fight they don't even realize when they're WINNING.
>>83503422
I love the notion that despite being a borderline autist Reed can social engineer like a motherfucker.
"Whelp, we all got superpowers due to a failed science experiment, better start a Fortune 500 R&D company with cross-media franchises and name branding."
>>83503403
>Peter Parker's whole character is "I hate the way superheroing cuts into my social life".
Not really, there's also, you know, all the actual superheroing. Besides he actually has a social life beyond just wanting to go shopping.
>Marvel characters are SUPPOSED to be written dickishly.
You obviously haven't read a lot of silver-age stuff.
>>83503451
>Yes and no, as explained before that's a strawman, not an author statement, which should be obvious to anyone with basic pattern recognition.
It is author who is writing it, it's her narrative that she is painting the mockingbird world in, of course it's a statement.
>>83503444
Sure but literally all the silver age Marvel women had the same concern, and really mostly that one concern: boys. They all had the same likes and dislikes because they were all written by Stan Lee.
The issue here is not that there was a couple of vapid bitches, it's that they're all vapid bitches, and that's just not interesting, not any more than telenovela which portrays all men as sex-crazed assholes.

The argument of whether or not they were likeable characters or suitable rolemodels for girls in the REAL world is irrelevant.
What matters is there were numerous very public, very celebrity superwomen at the dawn of the Marvel Age. A scenario in which a teenaged girl grew up seeing Thor on TV but no one with a vagina doing the same things as him to the same amount of publicity is literally impossible.
