Roy and Kory - IT'S KORY! - were stagnant as fuck in RHatO.
Roy was an insecure fuck-up who couldn't seem to do anything on his own and needed Jason for support and validation.
Kory was shipwrecked and stuck in an isolated island, because apparently humans hate hot orange aliens, and Lobdell couldn't decide if she couldn't remember her past interactions with humans thanks to her alien physiology, if she suffered some memory wipe or if it was all an elaborate lie on her part. It is only later thanks to the criticisms that we learned that she had been the most feared and respected starship commander in the galaxy tasked with fighting against alien traders and slavers, but despite being that in the past she for some reason was living on her ass while in Earth despite the planet being filled with alien slavers, including those that abused her in the past.
It's like Lobdell didn't knew what to do with her. Why was she stuck in the island? Why wasn't she pursuing the alien slavers that she knew their place of hiding? Why couldn't she remember or faked not being able to remember the past? Why was she following Jason around, just because he reminded her of Dick, which she could or could not remember very well? But hey, great characterization.
