Throughout the movie he is wearing the same bare chested black costume but in the third act he has to get past Giganto which fucks him up and tears the costume some. He keeps fighting on and then makes it to Attuma who in an amazing choreographed sequence beats Namor in but also rips almost all of his costume off with a gold trident, Namor tears off the remaining shreds leaving nothing but his scaly speedoes who keeps getting back up to fight on valiantly until victory.
At the end he stands trumphant defeating Attuma and saving both Atlantis and the surface world. The world sees their newest hero the newly crowned king of Atlantis in the skimpy green speedos.

I have no doubt that Namor would have been able to hang out with characters like the Hulk decades ago, but they've never been as strong as they are now.
