I'm pretty sure one of the writers, or the executive director, confirmed that a long time ago, that they didn't know S4 would be the last.
The only time LPS ever had a "send off" was the S1 finale. All of the other opener/closer episodes weren't particularly special.

Luckily, they seem to have learned something from the horse show: Quality cartoon pushes toys pretty well. Really the only thing that went wrong with LPS is that it didn't catch on like the horse show, and instead was overshadowed by it.

Because they saw how well the horse show's reboot was coming along (considering the production timelines and such) and decided to do the same thing with LPS while they were at it.
Despite the cartoon being imo way better than the horse show, it didn't catch on in the same way, and was overshadowed and ignored.
Yeah, most people didn't know LPS was a thing before 2012, because it was strictly a toy line, with the exception of a very obscure 1995 cartoon series, and some cheap flash animated webisodes here and there.
