I'm not sure what the current cannon is but it was that his beams were energy from another dimision and that his mind unconsciously creates a psionic field around him that when the particals from the beam hit it, are sent back to the point of origin... or something like that.

Pretty sure he could see in color if he could see without shooting things but through lenses it's just red, like it's not the eye beams causing the discoloration of things. But it probably varies depending on the writer and I don't know a specific source to check where I got this notion from that this is how it would work.
