If he DOES write a non big two fiction comic, my guess is someone like Fantagraphics, Drawn and Quarterly, or even Vertigo would be more likely to pick it up, based on his previous output. The bad symbolism of them killing off the black guy (if he's dead) will cost them as many readers as the CIVIL WAR movie lost viewers for constantly killing black guys.
(Seriously, almost everybody who dies or gets hurt in the movie is black. Crossbones/Wanda blow up a bunch of Africans, T'Challa's dad gets killed, Tony is guilt-tripped over the death of a black kid and Rhodey is crippled. Cost in number of viewers: 0.)
The problem with jumping on Marvel for killing a black guy is that it's blaming an individual for a collective problem. So it's possibly a collective problem that there aren't a lot of black characters in comics and it hurts more if one of them dies. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't kill Rhodey, it's just an extra data point against it.
So Coates told them it would look bad with black readers, they thought it over and did it anyway. Doesn't make them wrong.
