Regardless of what Pearl is capable of as the tech gem, I think she would be more valuable either way as the knight gem. Pearl is the best fighter in the Crystal Gems.
She's the strongestin the fake ass shallow wayand in a fair fight would probably get her shit kicked in if she seriously fought a higher tier Gem like Jasper or Garnet, but as far as skill and technique and sheer determination go, she is top Gem. And what makes her valuable to the team is that those skills and techniques, and even the determination to an extent, can be passed on. Look at how quickly she turned Connie from hiding in Steven's bubble to cutting down forced fusions like they're nothing.

You did a good job with the direction the light shines on her and the shadows.
If you're open to criticism, I'm not a fan of how she has a white outline all around her. Kind of ruins the sort of realistic feel the shading has when she's surrounded by a static white line.
Where the arms meet the gloves are a little weird, too. It looks like her arms are being pinched, as if the gloves are a size too small.
Those are the only two details that stand out to me as something negative. Overall, again, it is definitely decent. Good job!

the number of characters isn't really an issue, and I think if we count all the townies it probably isn't at much different
the real problem is that no one seems to be characterized consistently, they just act however is convenient for the current boarder, PB is probably the best example of this, but it can be pretty bad with pretty much all of the main characters, Finn, Jake, Marcy, and Ice King (although it works better with Ice King since he is suppose to be insane)

The pilot designs had their own special charm to them, like some cheesy 80s rock band, but I think I prefer the newer designs for their simplicity. I think the best balance woypuld have been the pilot designs with some of the over complicated (or non-important) details removed.

I have one about the Diamonds.
The placement of the Diamonds on the Diamond Authority Seal represented more than just gem placement, but also personality and power differences. White-Yellow/Blue-Pink was effectively a power chart, making Pink the weakest. The opposite placement of Blue-Yellow and White-Pink represented totally opposite personalities too, with Pink being compassionate, White being logical, Blue being calm, and Yellow being haughty. The four Diamonds effectively acted as a council to balance things out, and as such were able to make well-balanced decisions.
In other words, Pink Diamond was the most easy to defeat, and by whatever mechanism, she was. With her gone, the Diamonds lost their compassionate advocate, and effectively became a trinity based on cold logic and fiery retribution. This is why the war ended in the way that it did, they no longer had the compassion to hold them back. Furthermore, this may be why modern Homeworld seems so cold and technological compared to the Homeworld that colonized Earth, and why Lapis was so freaked out about how much had changed.
