It had a competitive scene for a couple of years. If you know where to look, people are still playing it probably, just not in droves. Shit, even Injustice had a very small scene that lasted into this year. Probably would've lasted longer than it did too if Capcom hadn't had gone full retard and fucked up the game the way they did, with all the glitches, the p2w bullshit with the gems that made people not even want to bother, etc. SFxT 2013 was a much better version of the game but it was kinda too late. There was no saving that mess, which was sad because on its own, if you just played the game, it was just fine.

Apparently it was nowhere near that. The MK team wanted to reboot the series with Armageddon and do a game like MK X but were also interested in doing a "cross over" just to give themselves and people a break from the main series. They almost had MK Vs Street Fighter till Capcom pulled rank and said there was only one game made by Capcom and that was it so the deal fell through. Midway at the time was fishing for licenced properties to stay open. WB was getting in the market and had a deal with Eidos penned and were branching out. Midway offered the MK team and MK team said MK Vs DC was what they wanted to do. DC comics were really hype about it. They mandated a T-Rating but even outright said to the MK team "It's not MK without fatalities" so they came up with the "Heroic Brutality" concept for the heroes as well.
It worked for NRS though. They were almost closed when Midway folded to the point they were sending pitches to publishers just to get picked up and stay open after their sister studio that worked on Psi-Ops and Stranglehold was closed. WB used the knowledge they had working with Midway to buy out the company catalog. Then told NRS to "Make the MK they wanted to make"
MK X was delayed again because WB asked Ed Boon if he wanted to do a DC Comics game which becamme Injustice.
Still, we'll never see that completed DLC and update for MK Vs DC because of the fuckery with the buyout (Which was Quan Chi and Harley Quinn along with fatalities for Shao Kahn and Darkseid)
