I honestly hate talent competition shows, but having this one be in an actual theatre feels like a homage to the original Muppets variety show. This is my main issue. The plot doesn't call for animals, nor does it seem to make any use of this choice at all. That needs to be called for by your plot or SOMETHING. Like at least do some animal-related jokes. USE the idea of them being animals. Do something interesting. Have an interesting idea or interesting genre spin if you're going to "mix it up" by throwing animals in there. None of this is interesting. It's the most banal plotline that they could have chosen.
It's like somebody was about to make a generic/hallmark channel family live-action film with humans, but then decided to make it an animated feature film with animals because of zootopia.
The only other movie I can think of right now that uses animals for just as little reason as this does is Disney's Robin Hood.
Maybe Surf's Up, but I haven't seen it so I can't really say.
Aside from that, all I can see from this film is just a condensed version of what half of animation studios these days just love to do: inject pop songs into cartoons. At least they're cutting to the chase. That seems to be the entire basis of the film. Pop songs/culture + talking animals = profit
