Also consider the story. An international team of experts sets out to find a lost civilisation. Obviously the lost civilisation will be somewhat exotic and an international team will have international people.
In fact I am a fan of this international team of experts,best of the best in their trait kind of thing. I would like to see this more often in fiction. Especially pre ww2 era

I'm gonna throw OP a bone, and guess that's what they meant through their buzzwords. Shows/Movies that have a fairly diverse cast, whether that be based on race or gender, among other misc. qualifiers, such feminist principals, that never come across as forced or preachy and are instead just a by-product of something well produced.

But for the argument in general you have to take into account additional identifies and background information. Take for example, Bryan Lee O'Malley's Seconds. For what it's worth it's an enjoyable story with a varied cast and had it not been mentioned, I'm sure most people wouldn't have even picked up on the latter part of that statement or noticed had it been more white/male/ect, but O'Malley made the distinct decision to purposely do this to the cast and was vocal about the need of diversity, and how had he realized this earlier,that it would have effected the Scott Pilgrim series. Now, does this in fact devalue it as a contender for the given argument? That's to be considered, but it doesn't overall effect the book as a whole, so does it even matter?
Once you get past the part of obvious pandering, it's hard to determine what was done strictly for the purpose of adding variety for the audience and what is just something that occurred because of creative vision. But, creative vision can and is effected by the audience based on how it effects the artist, but then the argument begins to change into an idea of taste; but that is the whole purpose of discussion to compare and contrast pallets.
