I would say yes. It managed to do something Moral Orel couldn't; it made a dark cartoon for 'adults', which managed to touch on very dangerous issues, have multiple very serious episodes, and still be mainstream. It's no Moral Orel in terms of storytelling so far, except for a few episodes, but it's a step in the right direction for serious adult animations. It's not mindless edgy murderporn shit like Mr. Pickles. And for now, I think that's enough to constitute 'new'

Rick and Morty has never had an episode devoted to it, simply worked somewhere in which Futurama, Simpsons, Venture Bros, and even Family Guy albeit poorly have done.
