I spent last night looking up old classic animators on youtube and such and got really into it. Seeing their scenes and their specific styles and talents was really impressive.

But... what are some of the best MODERN working animators, /co/?

Is there any?

Alright

What the fuck did I just watch

It was really fucking creative. I'm not sure if I enjoyed it or not

That's great! Reminds me of a Cyriak video, but handdrawn instead of Aftereffects.

Anyone know any good skilled ones working for TV or movies?

>>83426159

Why would they be extinct? There's lots of shows out there now

>Anyone know any good skilled ones working for TV or movies?

Michel Gagne, if you haven't heard of him. He
He's one heck of a master craftsman. This man worked on Iron Giant and Osmosis Jones.

Americans do EXTREMELY little animating on TV and 2D theatrical is dead
>>
>>83426443

Wow, I completely forgot about those scenes, really nice. Always thought Osmosis Jones had great stuff too.

Those are already nearly 15-20 years ago now though, that's not too great... Seems he did the recent videogame Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet though, super obvious it's him now that I look

>Americans do EXTREMELY little animating on TV

Why's that? I mean, we have all this history and expertise and everything with animation stuff, almost seems like a waste? Who does the animating now?

I do find it weird I can't really find any actual names though...

>and 2D theatrical is dead

Hm, that is true...what about 3D animators?

Sum Yung Ho and her other korean friends because koreans do everything from the tweens to the keys while working off of American storyboards. It's very very rare that people actually animate, like an Adventure Time episode recently by the Baman Piderman couple

Most discussion about TV animation is about the boards rather than the animators themselves

Nonsense!

Look at this scene, so much skillful virtuosic draftsmanship here by ALL AMERICAN animators!

That's why in the industry news and fandom nowadays, everything is all about interviewing and writing about the star Animators! Not the writers, or storyboarders, or 'head designer' who leaves after the 3rd season as the show goes to shit, or the voice actors...nope, always the animators.

I'm tempted to say pretty much anything Gobelins.

To expound on what the other anon said, American/Western animation is kind of dying. Its harder to see individual work as the industry is being sent overseas to Asia. The reason being is that the cost is way cheaper than having american animators and probably do not want anything to do with worker's unions forming for them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7fR6gLQ2C8

This pilot in particular was not greenlighted by Nickelodeon because it had 9/11 allusion, but because the director himself wanted to unionize the animation industry(or so I've heard).

With the advent of Tangled and Frozen, 2D animation is dead. 3D is what sells nowadays and other companes want to follow that trend. But I believe they have their own celebrities.

But if you're still interested, here's two more american animators you probably know/heard of.

Glen Keane's Duet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9CG_PoEWCg

Glen Keane has been in numerous Disney productions.

Ryan Woodward's Thought of You: https://vimeo.com/14803194

I'm not sure Ryan Woodward has been part of any movie/tv productions as far as I know. He's still talented.

Titmouse Animation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmyUr1oEykU

Countless productions. The trailer is basically their resume.

You're only going to get independent works and short movies and youtubers and stuff like that, all scattered out over many many years

Meanwhile other industries makes 100 new series a year, for TV, with mainly their own animators

Go take a look at some of the full disclosed staff listings of your favorite shows, old and new, and see what kind of names are there when it finally gets to the "animator" section

The meme is "At least we pay our animators a living wage" but the fact is that we don't even hire them in the first place
