I feel like there a three camps here. There are those that defend this movie because they thought it was genuinely good. Those who defend it because they want DC to keep making movies. And those who defend it because of Snyder.

What's funny is for better or for worse chances are most anything that got spliced in the theatrical was to make room for the nightmare material that wasn't in the script until Zack decided otherwise.
He could have just put it in the UE to focus on the actual events, instead he had his priorities all the way backwards.
Now there's nothing inherently wrong with dream sequences, flash forwards and what ifs, don't get me wrong, and Batman's paranoia is a driving motivation in the actual events so there's some relevance but footage of a deal in the back of the truck followed by a Parademon ambush while neat might not be that necessary.

Because he bankrolled development of this movie, the next eight movies. Three of them are already so far in production they can't be stopped, and they're the big-money ones from the pack. That Batman movie? Snyder paid the money that Johns and Affleck are getting to write the script, among other things. He financed this from his share of the gross on Man of Steel, about $68 million.
He's not doing work for hire, this isn't an at-will situation. If he's told to leave he still gets paid if his ideas or development are used, because they're his and that's what contracts are for. If they break the contract, he still gets a big fat payoff - the money he put in+interest+severance of the partnership.
The thing is, however badly his movies are doing - and they're not doing great - they're not actually bad enough to trigger severance automatically, so the studio is stuck paying him no matter what they do. Might as well pay him to work, it's not like anybody is guaranteed a hit if they replace him.
