They decided to use his Japanese name for diversity, to pay homage, and because he was pretty much the most expendable cast member to change. It's fine.
I'm not really okay with Pidge possibly being a girl. It sort of undermines Allura's original character arc. Also Voltron Force had just set up three diversity characters. You probably could have ported them over to some degree and increased Romelle's roll if you wanted more of that stuff.
