I was too young for this show. When I was 10 or so, I couldn't really see how each character in Daria is actually pretty balanced rather than just having a "creepy" or "ditzy" or "nerdy" or "loser" or "cool" kind of gimmick. It's really a cartoon you have to be a teen or older to appreciate in any way.

Most of the time the side characters are played as shallow stereotypes though, it's only occasionally that you'd see other sides of them, otherwise they really do come off as being that shallow. I don't care for most of it because most of the characters don't play off each other that well, even if it is clever sometimes.

i want to say most of them were kids who were dumb in first grade and wised up quickly, got school support [given more challenging work more appropriate to their ability] or were pushed to it by home circumstances, but that would be based on no evidence whatsoever.
