Honestly, for a lot of the same reasons Peter is popular.
Kids/teens find her relatable through her idolization of the older Marvel heroes, and her ongoings have shown her having similar problems Peter did when he was starting out (balancing out hero life with school/personal life, dealing with her supporting cast). I don't think it's any coincidence that Peter tells her she reminds him of himself when he started out and that she'll do fine. The main difference is that the writers aren't as eager to shit on her life like they were with Peter.

I think it's more that she faces today's problems when Peter faced the problems of his time.
Peter faced violence and exclusion through very narrow minded people, suffering from economic disadvantages.
But today violence has gone down a lot and digital communications have limited the additional utility of more money to a degree.
So Kamala is a statement against the orphan hero cliché, faces far more severe cost for college and deals with more social hierarchy and less rampaging hooligans due to zero-tolerance policies and the likes imposing very strict limits on bullying.
And thankfully the school is not treated as the end-all be-all of social interaction with everyone having an active family life outside of it.
