Rereading HB's adventures chronologicaly, I really get where he comes from and why he's disgusted with the BPRD as a whole. I understood it before, but this really hits me in the feels, especially after the stories from the 50's with Broom and others, when the red guy was genuinely happy.

i think his dad's death hit him very hard (obviously), so that's partially why he's estranged from the bureau, and the fact that his aging means all his friends die, and also bprd is genuinely run by less competent men now. so put all those together, and something like making roger a livebomb becomes the final draw.
i guess the fact that he identifies a lot with roger is part of it too, i don't think he ever had anyone who comes from a place as similar to him as roger.
