Without Batman, they wouldn't have money to make those extra comics, which allow them to try new things.
This is especially important since just because a comic is 'a different genre' it doesn't mean people will buy it. Just because people LIKE IT doesn't mean people will buy it. That extra money gives them stability, and allows for experimentation. Without it, it's just going to be Flash and Superman and GL.
