Jeph is pretty self aware, he used to do holiday comics where throwaway characters would call out how cliche and trite his writing was. I don't know if he's more subdued about it because he'd medicated or because he has a facade to maintain to keep his patreon bucks steady.

Jeff used to be a pretty decent guy. Pintsize used to be a /b/ mouthpiece, and that would lead to actual funny gags.
Then he stopped drinking. Now Im not saying thats a bad thing, but it hurt the comic. Random gags turned into drama. Drama turned into "heartfelt" moments. That shit caught the eye of tumblr and he got a major boost. Most of his pateron comes from his tumblr audience so he really has to cater to them.
And cater to them he does. Claire, Emily, and failed black intern were his big step into that demographic. Marigold was him dipping his toes into that water, but that backfired, ie hand stabbing 2.0 and his resolve to quit drinking. Claire took off because he probably had some inside views on that subject. (its been hinted at that hes trans and Claire is his fursona or whatever)
With Claire he could transform the comic into something different. Marten and a lot of the older characters (Hanners, Dora, Penelope Pintsize ect) could sidelined to focus on her and make the comic more female focused. Faye could be an outlet for the struggles of addiction and recovery (and turning into a lesbian). Dora.. well shes a lost cause because shes not even a character anymore. The Robots can be used as an insight on human values and things like that.
The comic isn't even the same comic it was 5 years ago. Its something new. Its virtually a spin off without a new name. Its season 9 of Scrubs, but it keeps going. Jeff has been saying he wants to quit QC for a while now, and for all intents and purposes he has.
