Slavery in ancient Egypt wasn't the same as slavery in pre-civil war America. A large percentage of the population was slaves, but they weren't treated like disposable cattle, they had rights, could own property and marry. They were technically "owned" by someone but it was more serfdom than what modern sensibilities understand as slavery and really not all that different from the lives of medieval European peasants who only existed to provide resources for their lords.
