The first season spent a lot of time developing those two characters as a means of introducing the audience to how emotion/power works in the Green Lantern universe. Pretty effective desu.

If you're being serious, Hal IS the main character, it's just that most of the character development happens around him. However this is still the best characterization of Hal I've ever seen. I agree that it panders to tumblr in that shipping is involved, but in no other way.

It really should be the other way around. You clearly define the main character first, then you start to develop the side characters.
